Hurricane question regarding cruise ships
My son and family got on a cruise ship out of New Orleans Monday or Tuesday traveling through the gulf of Mexico for the Caribbean somewhere. Does anyone know what happens in this case scenario? Does the captain sail to calm waters or go back into port? Of course, I have no way of contacting them. Anyone every been on a cruise ship during a tropical storm or hurricane?

Thanks...

1. Well...my friend works on the lines...
they often just weather the storm, because they are really too big to be affected by anything less than a full-blown hurricane. But, if it's not too difficult to change course, they'll move out of harm's way for the comfort of the passengers (usually in the event of a severe weather condition, passengers are asked to remain in their staterooms, which isn't much fun).

But, FYI, you can contact the cruise line company and ask the status/location of any ship they're sailing. If you don't know what line your son is on, contact a local cruise agent and ask which lines are saling where. If you know the port, the destination, and the departure/arrival dates, that will be enough information for the agent to determine which ship he's on.

Good luck!

3. I agree with above poster....
... they will ride out *some* bad weather... but they can easily steer clear of a hurricaine given the amount of advanced notice they can get.

Heyo
