I love volleyball!!
I really miss playing this game.. I haven't been able to since breaking both ankles in a car accident a long time ago.

  I'm watching it on TV now and I really miss playing. I used to have a wicked serve.. Damn ankles!!

1. I was a competitive gymnast
until I injured my wrist at 14. Honestly, I wasn't all that unhappy at the time to have to give it up. Practicing 3 hours a day, 4-5 days a week really sucked as a teenager. Luckily I also started getting too tall for the sport, so it was an easy decision. I still enjoy watching it even though I can tell the Olympic competitors aren't as "in to it" as they used to be (like in '84). They're starting to seem more like machines and appear to be having less fun in competition.

2. that kind of trainng is brutal
gymnasts, figure skaters etc.. I don't know how they do it.

I miss the team aspect, exercise, competition. Volleyball is a fun, fastpaced game that stayed fun for me even at higher levels.

4. my daughter's high school conditioning for vball has been brutal!
They have to run then jump into the pool and swim laps with their sweats on! I think I'd die! Then there's the weights and the drills. They've been practicing and conditioning for 2 weeks from 9a-3p Monday through Friday! Ugh!

7. I boxed...
as a kid. Still love the sport. Played football in high school and one year of college. Never had the speed or size to even dream of the NFL but I still dream about it even now.

3. I love watching volleyball!
My daughter has been playing since 5th grade and she's now a junior. Her first Varsity high school game is Tuesday and I'm SOOO excited! She's an outside hitter and will start and will play all the way around! She's been working for this time for a long time!

5. I've played volleyball for years and years
and at some pretty competitive levels. But, alas, I ruined my feet last year running. I really can't play anymore.

(strong thick ankles thanks to me!)....She's played club vball and school ball that makes it go almost year round since 6th grade.

9. I feel your pain..
I can set & serve etc.. but have almost no lateral motion anymore.... which is obviously necessary in that game.

12. I love volleyball, but hate the rally scoring
Edited on Sun Aug-15-04 08:11 PM by AwsieDooger
There was so much more intensity and opportunity for comebacks in the old system of scoring only when you serve. I attended USC during the USC-UCLA volleyball heyday of the early '80s, Karch Kiraly and Co. vs. Steve Timmons, Dusty Dvorak, Tim Hovland, etc. In the '81 final at Santa Barbara, the score stayed the same for a solid 20 minutes during the decisive 5th game, nothing but beautifully executed sideouts at 11-9 UCLA. The damn Bruins took the match 15-13 in the final game, after more than 4 hours of incredible play. The chair umpire, BTW, was rotund Wink Davenport, former volleyball Olympian and father of tennis' Lindsay.

They change the indoor scoring system so often these days I can barely keep track or care. Now it's to 25 in every game other than the 5th, a ridiculous 15 points necesary to win.
