The biggest newest best feature that Longhorn was supposed to host was its new file searching and indexing capabilities in something MS calls WinFS. Last week MS announced that that will be dropped from Longhorn and will not intially ship with the product.
MS's security advisor also said that MS's initial 2 year security plan (meaning, to make Windows secure), is more like a 10 year plan, so don't expect the security in Longhorn to be much better.
Given this, I don't know if there are going to be a lot of grand improvements over some eye-candy.
I'm a graduate computer science student with a B.S. in C.S. I only run Linux and Mac OS X at home, but I used Windows all summer at work. Aside from the fact that Mac's cost more, I'd advise everybody to switch to one. They used to be the platform of the artsy types, but OS X is based on BSD (Unix), and is secure and stable, meaning many computer geeks, like me, are switching over. It's also pretty and easy to use, so computer neophytes need not fear.
Ironically enough, the next version of Mac OS X, coming out in October, I believe, will have many of the searching and indexing capabilities that Longhorn was supposed to have.
