I'm Leaving For Seattle Tomorrow (Tuesday)
I must keep telling myself that the flight itself is safer than the ride to Dulles.

2. Hell, the flight is safer than the air in Houston!
I'm a native Seattle-ite. Say 'hi' to the dockside Ivars for me! I miss wrestling the gulls for my fried cod.

12. Consider It Done! -- We'll also be "window-shopping/house-hunting"
and examining the possibilities for a future move to Seattle. Nothing serious... just looking.

Only... I Fear That A Home Idential To The One We Have Now...
... would cost twice as much in Seattle (area) as it does in the Maryland burbs of DC.

Still... it never hurts to look.

40. I don't think you'll find it painfully higher.
I moved from Bainbridge Island (really expensive) to Boulder, CO 7 years ago and Boulder was twice the price!

The only complaint newcomers have is over the rain. My family says this has been an unseasonably dry summer in the Pacific NW, but when it rains, drizzles and drips for 3 weeks straight, it can feel very oppressive. I love Seattle. The people are awesome. The food and entertainment are fantastic. But I couldn't go back to the rain unless I had enough money and free time to travel to the sunshine when it became overwhelming.

Good luck house hunting! Elliots on the pier has an excellent seafood menu and Anthony's is also terrific but spendy.

3. Seattle is cool......
I have been there a few times, continue west and see the olympic range and the ocean beyond.....and don't forget to see Mt Rainer(even if you see it from fifty miles away). Plenty of coffee available to spur you on. See the places with native names and don't mis the sealife!!!

16. Okay, What Would You Like?
How about one of those "rolled" and flattened souvenir US-pennies that says "Space Needle"? You know... the ones where you insert three quarters along with a penny... then the penny drops down into a hand cranked press that squeezes it into a thin-flat oval shape and embosses an image of the Space Needle on it.

A snow-globe? A shot-glass? An ashtray? I'm an expert at finding tacky souvenir shops with all sorts of imported plastic finery.

17. Fun Indeed!!! This Ain't Our First Trip To Seattle... It Keeps Calling Us.
The only difficult thing is trying to decide whether we REPEAT most of the fun things we did before (guaranteed fun) or do we live on the edge and try new things and visit new places and try new restaurants and activities?

Oh... decisions, decisions.

I think we'll take a walk on the WILD SIDE!

23. You can get a ride up to the "Frasier view".
My brother, who manages the office of a limo company, used to take people up to the spot on Queen Anne Hill where 'Elliot Bay Towers' would stand in real life. This was back when he was a driver. There is actually a low three-story brick building there with a garden off to the side. You can stand there and take photos identical to the view from Frasier's apartment.

26. They moved around some buildings to make it look better
It always cracked me up that some art director had to redesign our cityscape for TV. :D

My parents live on Queen Anne, so I know the view you're talking about. Allen should go up to the aptly named Kerry Park for a photo shoot while he's in town! :)

43. hey, the Elliott Bay Bookstore basement cafe is BETTER!
Edited on Tue Aug-31-04 07:54 PM by Lisa
I'm pretty sure that Frasier's designers copied the bookshelves from there. That's where Bill Clinton did his book signing earlier this summer. The clerks told me that he even visited the store while he was still President!

Oh, and if you're downtown, the Monorail coffee place on Pike has a bunch of Kerry stickers in the window. Noticed it when I was doing a book-signing in town earlier this month.

27. Seattle is beautiful this time of year--I lived there for 3 years, and whe
it's nice, there's no prettier place in the USA. However, I couldn't handle the rainy winters--months on end with no sun!

30. But You Don't Have To Shovel Rain Out Of Your Driveway...
or use a "rain-blower" on your sidewalks. And you don't have to sweep rain buildup off of the roof and hood of your car before you can go anywhere.

"Pick yer poison, eh?"

I imagine that it would be easy for me to be overdosed on rainfall too. But snow ain't that grand after the first day or two either. Sigh.

I imagine we could find SOMETHING to complain about in Hawaii if we lived there long enough.... NAAAAH! Who am I kidding?

37. "Don't break up in the fall," she told me.
I moved to Seattle and got my first job in late September.

The personnel manager was chatting with me about life in Seattle - restaurants, neighborhoods and so on.

"The winter is really dark and really long," She told me. "I don't know if you have a significant other, but if you do, don't break up in the fall. It's too depressing. Wait until spring."

Good advice.

35. I always forget about Bumbershoot
I never go myself but for my own weird reasons - I can never decide what to do and then I'm filled with regret that I made the wrong choice.

But I'm always glad we have it.

If you are really considering the housing market, even casually, what sort of neighborhood are you interested in?

It's hard to overcome that fear, even if intellectually you know that it is safer than many things you do in your life that you don't think twice about.
