doesnt work. The device manager has those yellow exclamation marks and its says something like they are corrupted or whatever. :argh: this is driving me nuts.

1. Goto the manufacturer's website:

Get new drivers. Uninstall old drivers. reboot. Install new drivers.

6. That's your problem: it's a dell! Try this:

Go to control panel. Hit system. Under the hardware tab, click device manager. Go to "dvd/cdrom" and click on your drive. You can either hit troubleshoot, or go to the driver tab. Click update driver OR rollback driver.

Go to windows update, download updates.

7. I have much to learn?

I'm a graduate computer science student. I have a B.S. in computer science. My research is distributed parallel rendering on commodity beowulf clusters. Aside from many research and end-user applications developed on *nix flavors, I've spent years writing applications on Windows environments, and spent all summer as a developer a professional end-user application on Windows.

I have experience with Linux (which I run at home on three computers), HP-UX, Solaris, Mac OS 9, Max OS X (which I run at home as well), Dos, Windows 3.10, Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2K, Windows NT 4.0, Windows XP, Windows ME. I do most of my development on Linux and OS X, but I've also spent years developing on Windows.

I still recommend Mac OS X for most people. Powerful and secure enough for the nerds, and a lot more stable and easier to use than Windows for the neophytes.

Tell me, Guy Fawkes, what am I missing?

8. Macs are not good computers for most people...

They are, for one, expensive. Having built plenty of custom computers, I can say quiet honestly that I could build a fast, nice looking computer, for much less then a Mac.

Also, having fixed Macs at school, I find that they are not as stable as my home system, which I am running windows XP and Knoppix Linux on.

Another thing, judging from his previous posts about sound, I would guess that JohnKleeb is a gamer. Macs are the worst computer for any serious computer gamer.

The only person I would recommend a Mac to is someone who is completely computer illiterate and has a lot of money.

I dont have an abundance of money, just a student, and Mac I know for fact doesnt have as much games.
