4. Think about this...
They use the "spice" to travel and the planet is called "Iraqis".. (or pronounced that way) Which is a desert land... the people go on Jihad as mentioned in the film to take it back... Kinda puts it into a whole new perspective doesn't it?

7. It was inspired in part by the WW I Arab revolt in the Mideast.
And a lot of the language and religion the Fremen use is directly related to Islam/Arabic.

9. Once I started learning Hebrew, I was amazed at how
accurately the Fremen language sounds like mideast desert language. Obviously, it's not Hebrew or Arabic or anything specific, but it's constructed the same way, with some of the same roots.

For my money, Dune is the most intoxicatingly excellent science-fiction book ever written, in the sense that it's not only a great story in and of itself, but it's pure science-fiction in that it speaks to today using the language of the future. But no one else, ever, has put together a book that takes the "What if?" question and applies it so lavishly, and so precisely, over so many different fields of study and "what if"ness.

it is an absolutely amazing work, and a book I try to reread every couple of years.

'This is our hardest stone'

*points to a cheap-looking cone of styrofoam*

Damn, that is funny. That and Sting's scenery chewing, of course.

10. Yell at it...
BREAK!!!!!!!!! :) (oh, that fremen sense of humor)

(((Maudib: Even his name is a killing word)))

So incredibly cheesy. I love it. Only in the 80's. ..sigh..

What ever happened to the two main actors? (Maudib and Whats-her-bucket fremen babe Sean Young)

At least the styrofoam rock didn't look as bad as startrek props (plywood and paper-mache)
