The vet says my sister's new dog "suffers in silence"
My sister recently adopted a West Highland White Terrier which apparently had been abused by his previous owner. Vet says that he's the kind of dog that "suffers in silence".

I can tell you, though, that he doesn't silently suffer the presence of garbage collectors who show up to "steal" my sister's garbage...

3. I've taken
in 2 small dogs that were previously abused. It is very sad and so rewarding as they begin to realize there can actually be a home where they are treated with love & kindness. However, they become very protective of their new family as they will never forget the suffering.

So...be happy this new family member wants to protect you/your family!

4. Always disturbing to see that
Some friends of my uncle were driving in Missouri and saw a farmer holding a dog up by its collar and beating it. They were so disturbed by this that they talked about it for the next hour and finally decided they had to do the right thing. In spiter of being in the middle of a multi-state trip they got a motel room somewhat nearby and snuck back in the middle of the night. They liberated the dog!

My uncle fell in love with this black lab and adopted it from them. When he took it to a trainer for more help, the trainer knew instantly that the dog had been abused. We all witnessed a special bond between that dog and my uncle.

Hard to fathom what goes through some people's heads though when you hear stories like that.

5. Defend the precious, tasty garbage!
Besides protesting the theft of perfectly good garbage before he's even had a chance to nose through it, he may be upset that the garbage men have the audacity to enter his territory without coming inside to play with him.
