Poll question: Lots of Body/Face piercing /tons of tattoos
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 02:38 AM by UdoKier
Your prerogative.

This thread already provoked a pretty derogatory response, so I'll fold it up.

apologies.

1. I've had tattoos on my back for 10 years...
And I wouldn't call it a fashion statement. I realize it depends on the individual as some people like to flash theirs whenever they get the chance. Most people I know, even my closest friends don't have any idea I have mine. Not something I keep a secret mind you, but not something I advertise either.

2. none of your choices are relevant.
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 01:54 AM by gospelized
you show a real lack of understanding. probably best not to judge when you don't know what's going on.

edit: by the way, i seriously doubt the person in that photo would appreciate having copyrighted material posted here.

edit 2: oh you changed it.

4. And yet only one person has hit "other"
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 01:57 AM by UdoKier
I think the choices cover the spectrum pretty well. People are free to do with their faces/bodies as they please. And other people are free to like it or not.

I personally vacillate a bit on the subject, but I do find it amusing when people make it out to be something very profound...

I did go ahead and add one more "positive" choice, though...

5. well as someone
with 8 piercings and 12 tattoos, i can only speak for myself when i say that none of those options are even remotely relevant to my motivations, and basically make you look pretty ignorant. so i'd say no, the spectrum isn't covered.

but what do i know.

6. I did try to put in positive ones, and "other" is a catchall.
Exactly what am I ignorant of?

7. and of course
you're free to like it or not. but when you say "it's stupid or cool because they do it for this, this, or this reason" and none of them are why the majority (or any i can speak for) of them do it, it doesn't make you look like a very open minded or informed person.

everyone has different motivations behind what they do. for some it is profound, for some it's superficial.

hey, just like politics!

being a democrat is a conformist fad. how about that?

9. I wish being a democrat was even MORE conformist/bandwagon, etc.
Whatever the hell it takes. I don't have a problem with superficial conformity. I spent enough years in Japan to learn that even though everyone there looks alike, on the inside, an awful lot of them are MUCH more individual than we Americans, who often look different (although we follow the fashion edicts of our chosen cliques) but have VERY banal ways of thinking...

15. well
i apologize if i was rude. i don't mean to call you ignorant or whatever else i may have.

but i don't think this is a subject that can be summed up by a few options on a poll. though i doubt you meant the thread to be that serious.

in actuality all of your poll options apply to someone. which is exactly why you can't pick one and generalize everyone into that group.

for some people it is a profound lifestyle choice, with deep and important meaning to them and their existance. and to some people, they just like the way an earing in their nose looks.

i don't think we as a society need to spend a lot of time deconstructing and bisecting people's motivations for how they chose to live their life.

21. You bring up a good point.
None of them apply to EVERYONE.

Like I said, I vacillate a lot on this. I certainly think everybody has a right to do what they want with their body, but there are people who take it to such an extreme that every centimeter of their face is covered - and that would be pretty distracting in most workplaces! I suppose folks like that are kinda limited in their job options.

On the other hand, I've worked at fast food joints that were very restrictive about hairstyle, makeup, etc. and I resented that.

It's a tricky subject. Companies want their employees to project whatever image, so they can dictate appearance to a degree. I understand that, because if I'm hiring a lwayer, I want someone who LOOKS like a lawyer. But I realize THAT's very superficial thinking, too.

Anyway, I don't have an axe to grind on this. I thought it might be amusing and stir up discussion, and as you said, it may even foster understanding.

I'm at a point in my life where some days I'm so busy with work and kids I have to skip my shower, so the notion of people having time, money and energy for such elaborate work on their appearance probably makes me a bit envious...

19. i'm thinking
about starting sleeves soon too.

8 of my tattos are part of one backpiece, i just say 12 because it gets complicated. i should probably just start counting in hours.

3. I couldn't give a shit
I have no tatoos or piercings, but I don't look down on people who have them. They don't affect my judgement of the person good or bad. I pay attention to what comes out of a person's mouth not their appearance.

11. LMFAO.
That is the stupidest thing I've ever seen in my life. Even stupider than the new semi truck they're going to market to yuppies.

I wonder if "anal jewelry" fans swap and mix and match with their friends?

12. You just described me and I dont do it for "faddish' reasons
some of us actually do like them. I have had some of my "mods" before they became trendy. I don't know what posesses supposed "liberals" to get judgemental and prissy about body mods. If you don't like them DONT GET THEM. Simple. No need to start threads ridiculing those of us who do. I get enough shit from freepers.

13. Does it really make you feel bad?
Seriously, if it does, I'll erase the whole damn thing right now. There are positive choices in there, and I would think someone who can handle a pole through his temple could handle a fairly lighthearted poll like this.

I'm seriously not out to hurt people's feelings though. Say the word and it's erased.

it just makes you look bad. I am used to it. I just don't understand why people have the need to start a thread trashing others for their subjective choices.

18. this comes up in here every so often in here.
this thread is mild compared to others I have seen on this topic. Usually the anti- body mod people outnumber those of us "freaks". this topic bores the hell out of me. It's something I expect to see in right wing forums. I am outta here. have fun.
