Disgusting Hummer commercial just destroyed one of my fave childhood

memories...ASTROIDS. Shows full-screen astroid game...spaceship shooting rocks, then all of the sudden a hummer enters the screen and chases the ship off the screen.

It sounds familiar. I know that I was pretty good at Galaga, which you never see anymore. I was best, though, at Wizard of War. I always won that one. Describe Asteroids in more detail. I am sorry that this commercial spoiled your game. There are so many that try to cash in on our nostalgic memories, but only succeed in insulting or alienating us.:shrug:

2. It was a black screen...

with the white triangular ship in the middle of the screen. Basically, all you could do was rotate the ship and fire at oncoming asteroids.

The screen was monochromatic...black and white. It and space invaders were the "in" games--the only video games!--when I was a chap.

in extreme emergency you could hit the "warp" button, disappear, and reappear at some random point on the screen...hopefully unoccupied by an asteroid.

I ran into one of those in the Minneapolis-StPaul airport a few years ago - I set high score and still woalked away when I had to catch my plane. Only game I really ever played.

Hummer also got their greedy gas-guzzling paws on the classic Who song 'Happy Jack' for one of their commercials. Alas!

Several years ago, there was an interview - I think in Musician magazine - with Pete Townshend, where the interview was on his ass to defend himself for selling his music to advertisers. When the interviewer mentioned the California Raisins, and said he felt his memories were violated, Townshend's response was something like: "your memories attached to that song must have been very shallow if they're so easily violated by a group of dancing raisins."

At the time, I laughed, and felt that even though I personally didn't care for it, artists were well within their rights to sell their stuff like that.

But now that I look back, I see what it's opened the door to - creative artists being put under the leash of the corporate world. 'Don't speak at that protest - you might lose that endorsement.' Today's NYT has an article about magainzes' editorial staffs being used to write and produce multi-page advertisements designed to look like real articles - we've all seen them. Event sponsors demanding on-air exposure wherein a broadcast personality strokes their ego and props up these stiffs to make them look good.

I still think they're within their rights, but now see it as a total compromise of anything resembling integrity. They used to be court jesters, now they are court composers. And because of their actions, other people of talent and skill are being forced to follow suit. Thank you, Yoko Ono.

As for the game, I was never an asteroid fan.

in spite of the commercial.

I thought the commercial was pretty cheezy though. This is the age where commercials have dancing bassethounds and other animation. The Hummer commercial looks so one-dimensional through no fault of the video game.

10. How about the Hummer "soap box derby ad"?

Basically, since the Hummer has to go off road to win, since it is being out-accelerated by the other cars, this commercial says that cheating to win is OK. Nice message, assholes.
