1. Depends on the vet. Go and get an estimate and if you can't pay 100%
for it, then make a plan to pay. Good luck. :)

3. OK, thank you.
Would like for him to be able to see something for a while, though I don't know for a fact that they are cataracts.

2. how old is the dog?
it requires anaesthesia. is it worth it? does it bother the dog, or you?
i have a 13 year old border x, and he's turning into ol' blue eyes ... doesn't seem to bother him, though. i don't think i'd risk putting him under just for that.
that said, if it *were* bothering him, and i was sure he'd be fine being put under, i'd prolly pay whatever it took.
good luck!

4. Going on eleven I think.

Bothers both of us. He just lost his "brother" of ten years (actually unrelated) back in June July, and he has been acting very listless. We've been thinking of it for a while, but now it's seems even more important for two reasons:

1. His relied on the older dog to figure a lot of things out - been blind for quite a while, but he was always active until recently.
2. Seems like visual stimulation would help him.

Just wondering the range, since we're on a fixed income, which is why I was asking.

5. My dog Max had a cataract removed recently
We had to take her to an eye specialist. Max was thirteen when
she developed diabetes and required two shots of insulin per day.
About six months later, she developed a cataract which they said
resulted from the diabetes. She had only sight in one eye since
she was a puppy, so she became totally blind.

We had the laser surgery done - the cost was approximately $2200.00.
They said 1% of dogs can get glaucoma after this surgery. Well,
Max was in that 1% and we had to let her go. It was devastating
because she saw perfectly for one week, was like a puppy again
and on the eight day woke up blind again & in terrible pain. My
husband and I cried for weeks.

Anyway, do a lot of research. I'm from Illinois and prices may vary
from State to State but as I said, our cost to remove one
cataract was $2200. If your dog is young and in good health I would
surely investigate but be careful. You don't want to put your
dog through a lot of additional grief because of the decision you
make. Good luck.

6. Vet School nearby?
They normally cost a little less because its more experience for the students.
