What's your favorite non-Hitchock thriller?
Thrillers are my favorite type of film--the edge of your seaters.

My favorite is probably...The Manchurian Candidate or...Seven.

Props to the original Cape Fear and Night of the Hunter (Mitchum=scary as hell). And Primal Fear.

MITCHUM!!! His Max Cady was brilliant; so was Gregory Peck. And I still get shivers when I watch Night of the Hunter and hear him singing that song.

I still think Demme's swing from screwball comedy to thriller at that moment was brilliant. I love that movie.

He didn't want to be seen as the dirty old man (OH CARY!) chasing that sweet young thing around.... so they reworked the script so SHE was chasing HIM.

I like Audrey, but I never got the "WOW, AUDREY" thing....one of the things I get a kick out of in that movie is both of their weird "lived everywhere" accents.

:grr:

He is a good director (the only good thing about Signs), but he really does think he's Hitch, what with his "look at the clever ways I can put myself in the movie, like when I play the totally unrealistic solitary person of color in Signs!" It makes him look like an egomaniac. And plus, he's no Hitch by a long shot.

And as far as writing goes, won't SOMEONE PLEASE do the rewriting work?

He should just have the ideas and direct it. Someone else should do the actual scripting.

Btw LOL, welcome to DU!!

Remember when the Spacey character tells the detective that he was a member of a quartet in Skokie, Ill. I didn't get it even though I'd delt for years in my job with a real chalk/bulletin board company named Quartet from Skokie. The detective realizes Spacey is making it up from stuff on the bottom of his coffee mug and a logo on the bulletin board.

54. Is that the one where he watches the "Mother Father" film?
I was flipping channels one day and came upon a film (I think this one?) where they were playing a film that said "Mother" and then showed moms, "Fathers" and dads, and "Me", happy person. Then the images got REALLY twisted, and eventually the final images were "Mother" as a prostitute, "Father" as Hitler or something, and "Me" as a dead body (I think?). The music started out nice too I think, then got all heavy. I was too bummed to watch beyond that.

The most disturbing bits of film I've ever seen. Been trying to figure out what it was, and I think it was the Parallex View.

He (Beatty's journalist character) had a shrink buddy of his have a psychopath answer the questions on the application. But Beatty had to go in to that room to watch the film and have his body reactions monitored.

Apparently he was found acceptable because they used him.

But then again they put him immediately on a one-way mission to blow up an airplane..

Now I'm feeling paranoid...

37. Some overlooked faves
"Red Dragon" (3rd, or truly, 4th, remake of 1st, in Lecter series)
A lot of people didn't bother, since "Hannibal" sucked and went all gore and no psychology -- not like Thomas Harris' book.

Has Hopkins back as Lecter and a dream cast: Edward Norton as his FBI nemesis, Ralph Fiennes(!) as the nuanced and sympathetic killer, Emily Watson, Harvey Keitel as Crawford, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, original Oscar-winning screenwriter and score by Danny Elfman --- Directed by Brett Ratner, who was devoted to the book, "Silence," and Hitchcock.

"The Contender" -- not a scary "thriller" in the sense that some mean, but a political thriller in the tradition of "The Manchurian Candidate" -- watch the DVD with commentary to hear director note specific homages to TMC (and great inside stuff from Joan Allen and dir. Rod Lurie)
Can't imagine any DUer doesn't already know about this great movie...so I'll leave it with my belief that Joan Allen was robbed, imho.

"Arlington Road" Direction a little jerky (first time feature from music video), but it works with the story in a way. About domestic terrorism. A bit hard to watch some of it after 9/11, but it is an incredibly intense movie about paranoia, or is it paranoia? Jeff Bridges, Tim Robbins, and Joan Cusack. Chilling and great twists. Certainly topical.

"Suture" Obscure independent BW feature I saw a loooong time ago where a man from South America discovers his double/half-brother in Southern US and invites him down, with sinister intent as it turns out. Weird thing is, the two characters are played by actors who look nothing alike, though everyone behaves as though they do. And when I say "nothing alike" - one guy's lanky and white, the other muscular and black (I think he does Allstate commercials now). But it works and it's a fantastic story, beautifully shot.

Although not technically a thriller, I can't recommend it highly enough (murder mystery, but much more) "Lonestar" directed by John Sayles -- First I saw of Chris Cooper, incredible film.

58. Arlington Road was FANTASTIC. Excellent, excellent.
Had forgotten about that one, the ending is great. Thrillerific.

Red Dragon WAS a dream cast. Edward Norton and Ralph Fiennes are both on my list of celebrity boyfriends, and Hopkins was great as usual.
But I wasn't thrilled so much--maybe because I kind of knew what would happen...

The Contender was good too, but I thought the slightest touch preachy-ish at the end.

Haven't seen the last two you named--why do I know the name John Sayles? What has he done lately?

Yes, "Sir" Carol Reed. Evidently that can be a man's name in Europe.

Anyway, there are two versions, one for British and one for American audiences. The British version implies so strongly that you'd have to be terribly naive to miss it that the Count and the Doctor are lovers.

Faye Dunaway and TOMMY LEE JONES!!!! Woo Hooo Tommy Lee!

I nearly jumped out of my seat watching the first Alien--Tom Skerritt (sp), Sigourney Weaver, John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton.

with Catherine Deneuve, she's a psychologically off-balanced young woman who house sits her sister's apartment for a weekend and goes insane...this movie disturbed me for a few days afterwards!

61. Definitely "The Usual Suspects" --
That was the movie that got me back into the theaters regularly again--it reminded me of how good a movie can be. I saw it the first day it came out, in limited release. Loved it!

"Memento" is another good one.

And I really liked "No Way Out" with Kevin Costner. I found the twist in that movie to be quite unexpected, but it flipped me out times 2 -- I think I got twice the surprise that was intended, just due to my way of thinking.

63. "With a Friend Like Harry."
But it's very, very Hitchcockian.

64. "Harry qui vous veut du bien"
is the French title.

I've never seen anybody who wasn't actually Alfred Hitchcock do a better job with the Hitchcock formula of every day life gradually dissolving into fear and suspense with plenty of sly, black humor.

See it if you get a chance.

70. Dead Again
Kenneth Branaugh and Emma Thompson. You can watch it over and over and it still gets you. Robin Williams had a bit part.

86. I was so impressed with their American accents.
That was my first look at Mr. Branagh, who I think is just a smart, smart guy. Actually, Emma too now that I think of it.

Which is funny, because neither of them have done movies like that again!

72. The Narrow Margin
I'm thinking of the 1952 original version, though the remake was pretty good. It's a great cat and mouse thriller set on a train.

88. Just thought of another recent one: The Eye
A Hong Kong-made movie about a young blind woman who receives her sight after a corneal transplant. As she adjusts to seeing, she starts to see dead people (all the time), although she doesn't realize it at first.

Very creepy and atmospheric, with the added touch of taking place in a culture that still has a strong belief in ghosts.

89. Aren't they remaking that here?
I could be wrong....they seem to be remaking a number of Chinese and Japanese thrillers here lately.

Julianne Moore is in one soon I think--not the Eye....hmm.
