Would someone mind explaining the cause?. And what the real effects of them are?. When they occur in relation to the monthly cycle? And what can be done to minimize the effects?

41. It's unknown but

I got mine first day of menses starting when I was 19. The odd thing what that the cramps were not in my abdomen to start but in my legs. Later they spread to my abdomen also. When they first started, my doctor suggested it might be an electrolyte imbalance, but he thought it might be calcium and told me to drink milk. That didn't work so I just gave up and figured it was part of being a woman or whatever.

Year by year the cramps got worse, and I also started feeling weak. Something I read in the newspaper made me think it might be potassium, so the next time I got symptoms I drank a big glass of OJ. Amazing! Within 15 minutes, I felt fine.

I still don't know for certain if it was low potassium or something else, but I do know the OJ works for me.

I hold a lot of water in the week before and lose it in the first 24 hours of menses, so I wonder if that causes me to lose electrolytes.

Low potassium/low electrolytes can actually be dangerous. You can get low electrolytes from playing sports in the heat, too.

I feel weird posting all this on DU, but if this helps anyone it's worth it.
