Poll question: NBA suspensions. Too harsh? Appropriate?
I personally think that the suspensions are appropriate. The NBA is a business with fans as the clients. When you go into the crowd and puch the clents out its very bad for business.

12. Walton's an ass clown
Watch one game:

"I think the lakers have what it takes to get to the playoffs."

"The lakers will never make the playoffs."

Bill - pick a bandwagon and stay with it, you look stupid.

19. My favorite Walton moment:
It was during one of the early Bulls championship seasons. Scottie Pippen flopped under the basket (and ended up at the charity stripe a few seconds after Walton's comment).

Walton:dunce: sez... "WHAT is he doing? Good defenders can't be flopping under the basket!"

Other commentator: "Well, Bill, I thought that drawing fouls was *part* of good defense."

Cut to commercial.

22. I can't even begin to explain how much I HATE listening to him
When he commentated his son's College tourney game, I was so happy I couldn't stand it. He said:

(with luke's alma matter down with few seconds left, he was to take two free throws)
"My son and I worked on pressure free throws the other day to prepare for just this moment"

LUKE MISSED THEM BOTH! THEY LOST!

I was glowing.

2. Appropriate
I just hope the fans get nailed as well. They should be banned from the Arena, esp. the one who threw the chair. I've been a sports fan for a loooong time and I've never seen anything like that.

16. The league can't really do much to the fans
Other than prosecute them and revoke their season tickets, which they should do. They definitely need to invoke harsh penalties on the players to try to prevent this from happening again. They should also look into some sort of penalty to the people at Auburn Hills, since it was clear that their security people were not there or not doing their job.

Did something like this also happen in baseball in August? I think there was an Ranger's/A's game where a relief pitcher was suspended for the rest of the season for attacking a fan in the stands... so I believe that MLB handled the issue in a similar way.

I think if a person had run on the court and attacked a player, then they're fair game, but any player should know better than to go into the crowd and attack someone. Artest is going to lose $4 million+ because of this stupid mistake. At least he'll have more time to promote his rap album.

4. I know he got beer thrown on him
but man, what a punk. You gotta have some restraint. There were others that jumped into the stands, not to pull anyone out, but to throw some punches too-- they should have gotten harsher penalties. This isn't as "end of the world" as ESPN makes it out to be IMO. If I was in charge I'd can someone.

11. I agree, and the "fans"
should get the book thrown at em too. I would have said 50 games for Artest, 40 games for Jackson and 20 for Oneal, all without pay

There's quite a bit of art to it - to keep from injuring your opponent or getting injured yourself. He went to professional wrestling school right after two years of college.

otherwise it'll send the message that the fans can do whatever they want and suffer no consequences...and we'll see even worse behavior.

They also need to get Artest some counciling. That dude's fucking off his rocker. He has some serious anger management issues. This is not the first time he has gone all whacky.

15. Only right if fans spend years in jail for inciting a RIOT.
How many hard fouls take place every day in the NBA? Every year?

The XFactor here wasn't Ron Artest. It was drunk Detroit fans.

Are the suspensions appropriate? Sure, as long as the fan who started the incident is NEVER allowed to ANY sporting event so long as he lives AND he serves at least the minimum punishment for the crime of inciting a riot. (The more likely scenario is that they will be banned for a year or two, with season tickets revoked without compensation, according to ESPN)

17. Too lenient
O' Neal and Jackson should have gotten suspended for the rest of the year too.

Punching fans on tv is worse than what Latrell Sprewell did years ago. It would be good to make an example of these guys. A big example.

21. Not harsh enough
Artest should have been suspended for life. He can go play in Italy. The rest of them should have been booted for good as well.

Professional athletes do nothing for society except provide some entertainment, most of them know this and are grateful for the opportunity they're given. In the days when they weren't paid like super star entertainers, perhaps there was some rough nobility and commisseration with the fans, but when it's all about how much you're getting paid, forget it. The salaries being paid have pushed ticket prices out of a lot of people's range.

These guys get HUGE money to entertain us. They don't teach a kid to read, they don't come out and haul away your trash, they don't bust drunk drivers, they don't write software, they don't work retail, in short, they do NOTHING that I find remotely useful. If we wanted to throw urine and feces on them, they should thank their lucky stars they get the dollars they do and just throw their uniforms to the poor schlub that has to wash them.

Of course, I like professional sports, but it's just a diversion, that's all, like the Gladitorial contests.................

28. You didn't include 'not harsh enough.'
But action should be taken against the fans who provoked the whole thing, as well.
