So my husband found a wallet today with $2000 cash in it.
It had tons of credit cards, but no driver's license. He told his boss and they tried calling the credit card companies, who tried calling him, but couldn't find him. (He was a customer of theirs.) At the end of the day, the guy still hadn't claimed it, so they locked it up in the company safe. He'll probably come by tomorrow. I mean, that's a LOT of money to be missing.

I told an aquaintance about this. She's only a very casual aquaintance. Saw her as I was walking up my driveway. She's also a bush voter. Asked me what was up. She freaked OUT that he didn't pocket the money and THROW THE WALLET AWAY.

I was freaked out that SHE was freaked out. She asked me, "Did anyone see him find it?" and I said "No, he was alone."

She rolled her eyes and said, "Sorry, but that's just idiotic."

I rolled my eyes and said "Sorry but you're just immoral. What if that money is for his kid in college or his mother in a nursing home or something? And DAMN, woman, at the very least, haven't you ever heard of karma? Karma's a BITCH."

I asked her "Would YOU have kept it?"

She didn't even hesitate: "Hell YEAH I would. Too bad, so sad."

I just shook my head and said "Yeah, I figured you'd say that. Just for the record, I wouldn't. And my husband didn't. And you republicans are supposed to be the moral high and mighty ones, huh? What a joke."

Her enlightened response?

"WHATEVER."

The tension is high in my neighborhood, can ya tell?

(I haven't talked to her since shortly after the election but she kinda ambushed me in my driveway this evening. So I'm glad I took the opportunity to piss her off.)

5. That's just another example of why I cannot FATHOM
anyone buying that whole republicans being moral and having family values and shit. They are some of the most craven, immoral people I KNOW.

I'm not saying Dems are angels, don't get me wrong, but if I think of everyone I know whose morals are that of a sewer rat, I am thinking of people who voted for bush.

Hmm, why is that?

7. Ok I'll pass that on to my husband.
They are going to wait until about noon tomorrow to see if he comes back to get it and if not, they are going to turn it in to the police.

Funny side story: my husband's boss is a BIG repuke/freeper. He was amazed, too, that he didn't pocket the money and not say anything. WHAT the fuck is WRONG with these people????

17. Knowing that, make sure it's your hubby
that turns it in, or his freeper boss will get the money or any reward. ;)

Rightwingers are nothing if not hypocrites. When Shakespeare wrote, "Methinks thou doth protest too much," he was talking about freepers.

Edited on Thu Jan-13-05 08:47 PM by NightTrain
At the time, I was having financial difficulties. Consequently, I kept the money and mailed the woman's purse back to her anonymously.

Today, I'm in decent financial shape. As such, if the same thing were to happen now, I'd only take enough of the person's money to pay for the postage. And if I were in a particularly good mood, I might not take any of the cash at all!

25. Now *I* don't want to be a moral relativist
but to me there's a hell of a lot of difference between $30 and $2000.

Heck, I would have been happy for someone to keep the $30 just to get my purse (with driver's license, credit cards, etc) back and not have to cancel all that stuff and get a new DL, etc.

27. I can't imagine keeping that cash.
I can't even fathom NOT making an attempt to give back a wallet I found someplace.

You have got to figure that these guys saying they'd keep the cash are folks playing with situational ethics. If they'll screw some unknown faceless person they will screw YOU if the price is right. It isn't a matter of right or wrong for them--it is a matter of getting caught. I think keeping too much change falls in that same category, and so does the ATM spitting out too many fifties or a rain of cash falling from the sky.

I have to be able to look myself in the mirror every day and that means keeping my conscience clear. On a similar line of thought, I have actually had clerks argue with me when I tell them they gave me too much change back.

Your hubby is a good man and somebody I'd want to have for a buddy or an employee.

My bank once over credited me for a charge that was used on my stolen account number, and I said nothing. Three days later, I bounced three checks because I counted on the extra being there and failed to make a deposit.

Served me right, even if it is a bank that charges an astronomical fee for overdraft.

37. This Thread Is Making Me Feel Like a Shmuck
A few years ago, I drove away from a gas station pump (debit pay) and left my wallet on the trunk.

There was $80 cash in the wallet. Not $2k but pretty significant for my own means.

Someone turned it into the police, and didn't touch any of the contents. Sending a thank you note was one of those things I meant to do, but never got around to.

41. Aw, don't sweat it!
The person who did that probably wasn't expecting a thank you note! And they did it because they WOULDN'T keep the money anyway.

I once left my wallet on the roof of my car while gassing up and I drove off and it fell off. Some homeless guy found it and turned it in to the gas station ALL $200 STILL IN IT. The woman who was the manager MAILED it to me where I was living in ANOTHER STATE. I asked her who the guy was and she said she didn't know. I so wanted to send him something. I sent her a little fruit basket.

But please, don't sweat it!

Thanks to the stupid terrorist bullshit I had to take the chain off of it to get into sporting events and concerts making it much easier to lose. Fucking PNAC screws you in more ways than one.
