11. All of the above too...
One other thing; I see way too much of this on DU: those who transform coulter's name to make a transgender joke, unwittingly (I hope) making the implication that being transgendered is a bad thing. In my book, it's no different than the intolerant right wing making the same jokes.

Even more ironic is that it's being used by you on a thread about the right continuing stigmas and keeping minorities 'where they belong'.

We should drop the 'mann coulter' thing. What's in her head is far worse than what she looks like, and you denigrate a whole group of people by making them into a joke along side coulter.

22. More about being accurate.
Maybe she and Roy Cohn would have gotten along.

I never said transgendered was a bad thing. Maybe we should stop the whole Gannon/Guckert gay escort thing too. Is that saying gay escort is a bad thing? No. It's just saying that's what it is.

Yeah, I made everyone a joke. Right. This is nothing new.

Let's move on to more important things like banning Austin Powers. The left needs to be made more riduculous, thanks.

26. "I never said transgendered was a bad thing."
That's the insinuation you made by trying to denigrate her by calling her a man. To try to insult coulter by questioning her gender is defacto insulting the transgendered. You aren't the only one who's done it here. I was just pointing it out - again. It's no different than applying a 'homo joke' to her.

If Gannon was involved in a gay escort service, then it's simply bringing up a bit of ironic truth.

35. I don't think most people here care if G/G is gay, but freepers do...
The hates of the right make it interesting to point out that one of their own belongs to a group that they hate. It's a guilty pleasure to watch a neocon beat themselves up trying to run around in circles defending one of their foot soldiers while denouncing one of the groups they hate. The hypocrisy of hate should be pointed out and those that follow those beliefs should be skewered where possible.

Pointing out that Gannon/Guckert may be gay isn't about ridculing him, it's about watching the right twist themselves into a fit over it.

3. Gay and lesbian people were invisible.
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 02:08 PM by terrya
The sodomy laws in all of the states were firmly in place and enforced. Homosexuality was still labelled in the DSM as a mental illness. There was no gay rights movement...not that we know today. A few organizations...the Mattachine Society, the Daughters of Bilitis...were formed to fight for gay rights...but it was years before Stonewall took place and the gay rights movement began on a national scale.

We were largely invisible. And the Republicans (and to be fair, some Democrats) miss that.

4. All of the above
Women (for the most part) stayed home and took care of hubby and kids, Minorities were on the Other Side of town, and there weren't so many of 'em so they could be kept in line, and non-Christians weren't so 'in your face' and they certainly couldn't join "our clubs", much less intermarry, but were useful for certain business transactions now and again. If there were exceptions to all of this, it was perfectly permissible to gossip about those involved and publicly condemn all concerned. The poor whites could be dismissed by ethnicity and/or family background.

White Men Ruled. It's as simple as that.

6. I would say
all of the above. My Father in law, who I would not speak to, used to tell my husband that it was unfortunate that he was not born 20 years earlier when women did not think so highly of themselves. I hated that man.

8. OHHH, where to start with THAT one???
Abortion was illegal except in a very few states. The only one I knew was NY, but I lived in Pa at the time and wouldn't have heard about any others.

Divorce was rare. It happened of course, but people were branded (verbally) as grass widows, or whispered about in the corners of society.

Integration wasn't even talked about, and there sure wasn't any thing like bussing.

There was no affirmative action anywhre.

Women mostly stayed home, did the housework and raised the kids, and didn't complain about!

The 50's was before the bikii, the mini skirt, hip huggers, and lycra.

Of course there were some good things too!

The grocery bill was under $10.00 a week.

A visit to the Dr. office was $4.00, and he gave you your prescription from the bottles of pills he had there in his cabinet.

Gas was .20 a gal.

A new NICE house was under $8,000.

Milk was delivered to your door.

There was no Walmart!!!!

AHHHH, the good old days!

31. Yep. It's filtered through their lens of revisionism and ignorance.
Do they want the income tax rates of the 50's? Nope.
Do they want Brown vs. Board of Education? Nope.
Do they want to repeat their "whigger" reaction to Elvis? Nope. (Well, maybe.)
Do they want US troops dying in Korea? Yep.

21. You mean the 1850's, correct?
The 1950's were WAY too racy and progressive for them. Women were allowed to vote.............and even.........MINORITIES!

Oh no, the 1850's were MUCH better for them. Slave labor was abundant, women knew their place and disputes were handled with the draw of a gun. Republican heaven.

28. I think they see the 50's as the closest realization of the conservative
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 06:26 PM by Lone_Wolf_Moderate
utopia, at least Pat Buchanan does. Basically, it's all of the above. Mothers stayed home and had children. Neighborhoods were designed in ordered methodical rows. The Cold War was raging, black and white TV, McCarthyism, and all the moral flaws of mankind tucked snugly under the bed. Is it any wonder why conservatives loved Hollywood in the 40's and 50's? You could argue that this vision was perfected during the 1980's under Reagan, but all in all the 1980's were a lot more liberal. Besides, I hate thinking of the 80's as a conservative utopia. I grew up in the 80's.

34. Perhaps in One Way They Miss What We Miss
1) Having a nation less divided in some respects, but agree minorities were on the move (thank goodness)
2) We had a booming economy, except for Agriculture (my folks always said the 50's were dry)
3) They had more funds to offer for infrastructure, car companies were busy, and cosmetics were rolled out to women finally of middle class, who were able to stay at home with the children; no juggling of a bunch of schedules
4) Congress didn't really work that long of hours, and they were concerned about trivial stuff, like McCarthyism
5) Old time rock and roll, Evis
6) GI's had their education after the GI bill, then got really good paying jobs
7) TV was through a rose colored tube; they are probably half-ashamed that many of their contributors put out smut
8) Technology raced then as well as during the 1960's
9) LBJ
10) Golf was really "Gentlemen only, ladies forbidden", but I don't miss that at ALL...
11) No St. Ronald Reagan yet
