Air Supply were in some ways lyrically better than The Beatles.
I can make the run or stumble, I can make the final block;
And I can make every tackle, at the sound of the whistle,
I can make all the stadiums rock.

Though this lyric, culled from their 1983 tune "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" begins on the subject matter of football, it's the last line I am interested in here, because it could be said to have a dual meaning in terms of football and rock music. There's a certain rock self-consciousness here, a certain self-reflexivity, an acceptance of the role of rock star in the arena of rock that I don't think The Beatles ever showed. Did they ever write any songs about being in the role of rock stars? I can't immediately remember any, which is just as good as there being none at all, as it shows any such notion expressed by them didn't have the kind of endurance that this Air Supply lyric does.

2. I don't think that that's about his role as a rock star per se.
In it, he is not rocking stadiums or even strumming riffs, but simply being a controversial figure.

3. Surely you jest!!
If not, trolling has reached a new intellectual low.

If so, I chuckle approvingly.

4. I've read where 'Help!' was a response to the whirlwind non-stop...
...out-of-control life of suddenly world famous rock stars.

That being said, I've never liked the self-reflexive rock songs about being a rock star: oh woe is me, the road is so hard, I'm so good, no one understands me, etc etc. :eyes:

5. Still, it only hints at it.
There is no bold and stoic acceptance, no reveling in taking to the stage.

7. You make a good point, and it's another plus for Air Supply.
The Beatles had what could be described as an unfocused, inconsistent output. Listen to Revolver or most of their other albums, and you will find they expressed scattered sentiments, whereas Air Supply consistently provided us with a relaxing light-rock sensibility; it is musical Valium, in a sense. Good call.

8. Kick.
Air Supply is important on this Valentine's Day, where many people are "Lost In Love".

11. or, unfortunately, "all out of love"
I actually saw this group in concert at Six Flags back in high school. I really liked them, bought all their albums. God, I am so embarrassed now!

13. When was that?
Was it at their most popular, around 1980?

I think they are still together, as they seem to have been pretty consistently releasing albums since they formed.

9. Unfortunately, the Beatles were drug-addicted hippies
Hence their lack of lyrical focus. They couldn't express the idea of being rock stars because they were stoned on dope 100% of the time.

Air Supply would occasionally have a glass of red wine with dinner, so they were clear-headed enough to actually realize that they were rock stars.

12. Sure
Though I know (at least I think) that this thread is in jest, I think it's absolutely true that in some instances Air Supply had better lyrics than the Beatles. And the Beatles are my favorite band ever. Still, they had some lyrical travesties: "Love Me Do", "Little Child", "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?", etc. And Air Supply's lyrics aren't always horrible, just usually unbearably sappy, and their music did little to make up for it. And I kinda like "Making Love out of Nothing at All" if not much of anything else by Air Supply...
