(Novell) Suse Linux 9.2 Pro x64 kicks some ass!
Somewhere between v9.1 and 9.2 Novell took over, and it looks like they made a few improvements. I couldn't get 9.1 to see my graphics card, but 9.2 had no problems with it, and also for the first time, I haven't had to do any external driver installs to play my mp3 collection!

I've appreciated the 32 bit version because it can access (read only) my existing NTFS partitions, but the new version on an AMD 64 processor goes a lot farther. It really rocks.

An odd thing about my new motherboard-- the driver and utility cd that comes with it only has 32 bit stuff on it. You'd think they would create 64 bit drivers for a 64 bit mobo, at least for Windoze. But NOOOOOOOOOO. Apparently foresight and creativity only go so far, and no farther.

Take a lesson, you nitwits (the mobo designers). Finish what you start, eh? Sheesh....

1. SuSE's quite good, I use it myself... (9.2 Pro)
I can't afford 64-bit yet () but it's great nonetheless. :D

2. They couldn't really go all the way with creating 64-bit drivers
Edited on Sun Feb-27-05 08:24 PM by ET Awful
since there is no official standard for the drivers since the 64-bit version of XP isn't available yet, other than in early pre-release form.

I know that the VIA chipsets have drivers available in beta versions for XP 64 though.

It's not the mobo designers, it's the chipset designers. The motherboard manufacturers get their drivers from the chipeset designer.

On the Linux/Unix front, I haven't had the time or inclination to set up a secondary boot for it. I've been spending too much time replacing hardware lately (had two hard drives die on my in the past few weeks, along with a motherboard).

3. Seems to me like it's like designing and selling a new Jaguar V12
and then equipping it with those skinny after-a-flat temporary tires.

If no standard exists, then the designers should create one.

And Windoze x64 DOES exist- for Intel. It should be just a matter of taking the next step for the AMD boards...

4. Actually, it exists only for Xeon chips which are not designed for the
same purpose as what you are discussing.

It also uses a completely different instruction set which is not compatible with legacy applications for the most part (unlike AMD's 64-bit processors which are 100% compatible).

It's not just taking the next step, it's a complete ground-up re-write.

5. I bought it, and it locked up my bios.....
...and have no idea why???

I had a trojan virus that wiped out my hard drive, and was so disgusted, I was going to get an Apple. The guy at the computer shop I took it to told me to try Linux before I did that. So I bought 9.2. I could never get it installed, and as stated, it crashed my bios. I talked with the customer service on about 6 different occassions, and frankly, they were less than helpful, and really never could "walk" me through the process. So, I'm out $90, and reintalled XP. I'm not a computer programer, so its not exactly like I can sit around and write software on how to install it. I thought that you put the disc in, and it installs it until it tells you to put the next disc in. No such luck. So I've given up, and will just deal with Windows. I hate that I have to stay with it, but I don't want to have to reinstall it for the 3rd time, in order to see if 9.2 installation locks up again. Oh well, if anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.
