Molly Hatchet lead singer dies at 53

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- Danny Joe Brown, the lead singer of the Southern rock band Molly Hatchet, died of complications from diabetes, his family said Monday. He was 53.

Brown died Thursday at his home in Davie, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale, his sister Lyndia Brown said.

"He had been in the hospital for about four weeks before he died, and he wanted to come home and he was home for 30 minutes when he died," Lyndia Brown told The Associated Press. "He was surrounded by his children and his wife."

In 1975, the Jacksonville native joined Molly Hatchet, named after a Southern prostitute who allegedly beheaded and mutilated her clients. Brown was frontman for its self-titled album in 1978, which went platinum. In 1979 the next album, "Flirtin' With Disaster," sold over 2 million copies.

Yes, I will confess I owned their album "Flirtin' with Disater"

Brown left the band in the early 1980s because of his diabetes.

2. No Blackfoot Reunion Tour either.
Jakson Spires, the original and very talented drummer, suffered a cerebral aneurysm night before last. He is not expected to survive.

3. Hatchet is with one 't'
And I loved them. Saw them in concert 7 times, and always had fun - lost part of my hearing I am sure. Danny Joe Brown was blessed with a helluva voice, and their classic material holds up better than most of the shit on classic rock radio these days.

"Fall Of The Peacemakers" was their greatest song, a tribute to MLK, John Lennon, and JFK - people the band admired who were killed for what they believed in.

Also, one-time bassist Riff West was a serious animal-rights activist and vegetarian, so so much for southern stereotypes.

Incidentally, the current version of the band is doing well, and Brown himself picked an able vocalist to replace him.

Farewell, Danny - you had a good soul.

9. LOL
You have to growl a big "HELLLLLL YEAH!!!!"

Saw them at the Boathouse in Norfolk just about every time they came to town. In fact, they headlined the very first concert I saw in 1981, at Hampton Coliseum.

13. I used to hang out with Mark Onks
He was the music director in the mid-80's or so. He bought the station's CD's at the same store I frequented in Va Beach, Birdland Records. That's where we met and chatted up music all the time. Good guy, allowed me to tour and meet everyone there. I had one of those cheesy "FM99 Advisory Board" t-shirts, lol.

Arlo - he of the handlebar moustache from hell, lol.

5. Very sad. Great music, great album covers
Gotta love a band with that many guitars.

And to die so young, and from diabetes. Sad.

7. His diabetes had been a longstanding problem
When he left the band the first time in 1980, it was because of the diagnosis, and he couldn't handle their then break-neck touring pace. He did a solo album, then got in shape and rejoined in 1982.

One of their original guitarists, Steve Holland, graduated the same high school as my sister did, 10 years before her. My history teacher in high school (same city, different school) knew him as a kid and had home movies, which my 16 year old mind thought was the coolest thing.

10. Check out the CD "The Essential Molly Hatchet"
Edited on Tue Mar-15-05 09:23 AM by ZombyWoof
Which is fairly recent and readily available. Especially the song "Fall of the Peacemakers".

Their biggest chart-topper after 'Flirtin' was "Satisfied Man", although not up to par with the earlier stuff, came out in 1984. Better songs on the radio from the early days were "Dreams I'll Never See", "Bounty Hunter", and "Whiskey Man".

14. hell yeah!
A great LIBERAL song too! Loved how the lyrics used Lennon and MLK quotes in them. I played many an air guitar to it.

Think I will play it today.
