3. Decent Mexican food . . . unless of course I make it myself.
Other than that, Mass. is pretty good for food. :)

Good salsa isn't readily available though, I have to go to a couple of different stores for good salsa.

37. I gave up on Mexican food a few assignments ago . . .
They just can't make it outside of the States. However, I have eaten REALLY BAD Mexican food in Kuwait, Hong Kong, and Romania (and, of course, in Mexico).

Unless you're masochistic or just unbearably homesick for a tortilla, stick to the US when it comes to Mexican food.

41. I am in the States, but I'm in Boston.
Boston, being nearly as far away from Mexico as it's possible to be and still be in the States, isn't quite clear on concept of Mexican food.

There are some acceptable places, but none I'd rate as GOOD.

4. There are very few things I can't find here
The only exception is real Vermont maple syrup (all the real syrup I find comes from Canada). I have a gallon delivered about every six months from a Vermont farm by mail. I use maple syrup in practically all my cooking and I'd just as soon support the farmers of my home state as buy from somewhere else.

10. We've got lots of Yoohoo in Georgia!
We can get some fresh seafood here in North Georgia, however, we get most of our seafood when we visit the GA and SC coasts. We like to go crabbing and throw the cast nets and fish.

Things we can't get here:

beignets (French doughnuts)
decent oyster Po'boy sandwiches
stuffed artichokes (like those we can get in Lacombe, LA)
pralines

I hope their food prep & handling procedures haven't changed, because even for a kid I was very impressed. I mean, very. They cook their own beans & taco meat from scratch, for example, unlike Taco Hell.

It's good stuff there. WORLDS, infinte worlds away better than Taco Hell.

Yep. Born in Santa Monica, raised in Huntington Beach.

I'm a Bronx gal living in exile in northwestern NJ, and even at this slight remove, real good pizza and bagels are just not around, not by NYC Standards, anyhow.

Same goes for real 'hard rolls', Black & White cookies, and Egg Creams.

The finest on the planet, but not available in this hemisphere. I have people coming out here on business smuggle it in their luggage, but the smell is pretty intense and I'm afraid they'll get stopped by some officious customs officer (like there's any other kind), and accused of bringing in drugs. Which it is. Sort of.

Anybody coming to Cluj from the SF Bay Area soon?

Milk is $4.50 per gallon here in SF at the supermarket. Bananas are $.79 per pound. My grocery bill is about 20~25% higher than when I lived in Florida last year, even with coupons and club cards. I save a bit by going to Smart & Final for some items.

79. The second one would spoil.
I get Berkeley Farms at Smart & Final for about $3.25, which isn't bad. They sell bananas for $.39/lb. Albertsons, Cala and Safeway are all overpriced. The Safeways here are the absolute worst. Prices are higest, and the stores are tiny, with a poor selection and malfunctioning coolers, etc.

If I have to go to a pricey supermarkets, I go to Albertsons. The chinese markets have the best prices on fruits, veggies and meats, though.

so the deal on the Dairy Glen works out for us... For fresh stuff, I go to the Farmer's Market on Wednesdays at the College of San Mateo, or the (mostly expensive) Farmer's Market in Pacifica. The Albertson's by me are the small and dingy ones, and the Safeways are big and moderately priced. Then again, I came here from NYC, where I was paying high prices for food anyway.

66. Oh, and I forgot - no Dunkin Donuts here either.
When I was a kid, we used to get doughnuts from a Dunkin Donuts-like place called Mr. Donut.

59. A good turkey and guac wrap
Popular in CA and the west, damned near impossible to find in Philadelphia. And a little healthier than cheesesteaks and hoagies!

64. Name brand diet ginger ale, of all things
I can find Safeway brand at Safeways, and sometimes diet Vernors at Market of Choice, but no standard name brand diet ginger ale anywhere else.

Real San Francisco sourdough bread. We have a couple of good artisan bakeries in Eugene, but their sourdough just doesn't cut it.

Really good ethnic cuisine, but I got spoiled from living in the SF bay area.

65.  An ex-philly gal, huh? I just found a place near me that has that stuff
I'm so happy- they even fly in Amoroso's rolls and Goldenberg Peanut Chews.

Now if only someone would bring in Bassetts Ice Cream...

72. Decent Chinese food!
If anyone in Bellingham (WA) knows of a GOOD place please do say so. I've been to Kowloon Garden, Kowloon Inn, Manchu Wok, and a bunch of other places and the chinese food sucks here!

Ugh!

No Sonic either, I would like to try them someday. No In & Out Burgers.

80. Working in LA turned me on to In-and-Out
I asked the parking lot guy where I could get a decent meal at 3pm (the one time places are usually closed). He was SHOCKED that I didn't know "In-and-out", and pointed out the nearest one.

I don't care that they're owned by hard-core fundamentalists Christians, they are damned good (especially if you haven't eaten since 6am)

89. Here's my area:
Boston Market
White Castle/Krystal
Steak -n- Shake
Seafood caught today
Indian food (now that the only Indian restaurant in town closed down)

And that's basically it.

And you CAN get good hoagies and cheesesteaks here. Broadway Classic Subs has the BEST subs/hoagies/heros in town.
