Windows XP computer geek question
I'm trying to compile a list of all the music files that I have on my hard drive. They are all in the same folder. Is there an easy way to copy the names of the files into a text document (Word or whatever)? Copying and Pasting is taking forever.
Thanks.

1. check your keyboard to see if the print screen key is an upper
or lower key. simply open a blank word document and then hit the shift key and print screen button. then paste it into the document and print it out.

2. I have a lot of files, so that will only capture what's visible in the
window. Was hoping there was some secret export trick that someone knows.

4. It's easy.
Do you know how to use the command prompt?

To compile a list of all the MP3 files on your hard drive, open a command window (dos prompt) and type:

cd \
dir *.mp3 /s >> mp3.txt

It may take a few minutes to run, but it will scan your computer for MP3 files and put the directory information into a file called mp3.txt. You'll have to clean it up (it's the raw dir output spooled to the file), but your data will be there.

7. ok dumb question
I've got the command prompt open, but my music is on my d: drive. How do I get there from the command prompt which only seems to want to let me move about the c drive?

8. to change drives ...
type
D:

then either
dir /s *.mp3 >file.txt (assuming it is mp3 music)

or

CD \Music Folder Name\music
dir >file.txt

you replace file.txt with the name of the file you want to store things in

the info in the file will be of the format
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 501B-50E3

Directory of C:\

10. You should use >> instead iof >
> outputs the contents of the syscommand to a file, but only >> will create and overwrite the file if needed.

11. Actually >> means append to the file.

> creates a new file every time
>> appends to the file if it exists
| pipes the output to another program that can receive data on stdin

13. Look like I was wrong.
I haven't been a DOS user in years, so the memories getting a little rusty I guess :)

According to Technet, both > and >> will create the file if it doesn't exist. > replaces the contents of the file with new contents, and >> adds the new contents to the end of the file.

5. Try this handy little app.

DirPrinting. You can print with it or copy to your clipboard. Works great. Small too.

you can get a demo at their website.

on edit: I forgot about TagScanner. It's freeware, and does just about the same as Treesize, but it is exclusively for MP3s.
