1. Hank Hill is a Republican....
When talking about America's great attributes he mentions two George Bushes

and when Reagan is mentioned he says "I sure do miss voting for that man"

4. Hank and his wife are both Republicans
because that is their culture.

If they had more exposure to the rest of the world then I think the wife would be Dem and Hank would be an independent. If their son grows up and moves to New York or California, he will vote Dem most of the time.

That show is truly strange...but I must admit I do find Dale Gribble very funny.

15. I bet Dale voted for Nader.
Maybe Libertarian. Or else he doesn't vote at all because its a government conspiracy.

Dale wouldn't vote. I can't imagine that it hasn't come up before, though.

17. He votes for Texans
He named his dog 'Ladybird', after the Democratic first lady. And he's a fan of Ann Richards, too. So, if they're from Texas, he supports them. While he might have a lot of Republican opinions, he also is "tolerant" of gays. And, as someone already mentioned, he sure didn't like W's clammy, weak handshake.

19. Oh, yeah. That too.
Compared to Cotton, Hank's father, ol' Hank is a pinko commie!

And another thing, Hank worked with Jimmy Carter and seemed thrilled by Carter's presence. I can't imagine a brainwashed redneck Republican being caught downwind of a Democratic president, much less eager to work on a project with him for Homes For Humanity.

And Peggy is about as feminist as you can get, short of being a lesbian.

23. This show's whole reason for being is to make fun of Hank Hill
and/or Peggy Hill and their narrow-mindedness and xenophobia.

The upshot of the show is at the end of every episode when they learn something about embracing the rest of the world, or that their values aren't the only ones worth anything.

24. I think Hank and Peggy
are basically decent people. I think their son is gay and that they know this on some level. I think that they love their son and will support him.

But Hank and Peggy aren't going to rebel against their culture and where they live being Republican is the same thing as being American.

Ironically, Hank and Peggy's Asian neighbors also equate being Republican with being American.

29. Hank and Peggy are
run-of-the-mill Repugs, the kind you can (almost) have compassion for, they're so earnest and community-minded, even as they support the worst in neaderthal thought. There's hope for little Bobby, though...he makes up his own mind.

It's a cliche, but minorities will often take the side of the dominant party in order to fit in. And they way the dominant party is perceived is often superficial--by questionable measures of status and prestige.

31. In the novel
"The Night of the White Chickens" the author mentions a family that moved from the city to the suburbs and immedidately changed their registration from Democrat to Republican.

Also I heard a Mexican-American author say that after his father made some money, he registered as a Republican.

I think that many people, including immigrants, vote Dem when they perceive themselves as needing protection against discrimination of any kind. Once the people think they have "made it," then they vote Republican to show that they have "arrived."

28. Hank Hill is my neighbor.
Seriously.

Arlen, the town in the show, is based on Garland, right next to my town.

Mike Judge, who draws it, is originally from around here. His sister used to go to UNT with me years ago before he got big. HE draws what he knows.
