Wow, Elliot Smith died....

Can't say I was a super fan, although I had a few of his solo albums and also some of his albums with Heatmiser. I'll just always remember how weird it was seeing this dude in a white suit with just his guitar and his awkward voice singing alone on the stage at the Oscars a few years back after his song from Good Will Hunting was nominated.

7. Aw, man.

There was an article in Magnet magazine just last issue, one of their writers had seen a show and said something much like the guy in the Pitchfork article -- that the show was uneven, and that Smith seemed depressed and 'out of it' between songs.

'Waltz #2' is one of the perfect mix tape/disc songs, for me. I've got it on several of them.

Now we've got another rock and roll ghost.

8. I didn't even know him

and wouldn't have known of him but for the news that came across the DU today, and then..

Today my oldest daughter received some cds in the mail, she was so excited they had come. I asked her about them and the order was Simon and Garfunkle's 3 CD collection, and an early Bob Dylan. I was really impressed with her choices, we sat here until just an hour ago listening and talking about the music, and she said she wanted me to hear a CD from her collection, and popped in an Elliot Smith. As i listened to this beautiful song, in the back of my mind there was the nagging and sad realization, so i checked back here.

i had to tell her, but only after looking here in a search and making sure. It's not like Janis, Jimi, Jim M. More like Nick Drake's passing, but then, damn.
She took it really well, not sure i can as well, just seeing the innocence leave her face in times like this. Watching as she grows wiser, and myself older.

sad news to this new fan.
