17. I like Murphy's!
I'm not sure what it is, but I taste something rather smoke-like when I drink it.

I've not yet tried Beamish...

18. stay away from beamish
i've even had it from the source (cork) and I still hated it. I like murphy's b/c it has a less bitter aftertaste than guinness. I've never tasted the "smokey" flavor, but I may have to pick up a 4 pack tonight just to make sure;)

22. I'm a violinist
so I practice a lot. I also like spending time with my kids, though the 16 year old is not as into "family time" as the 5 year old is.
I have 4 kitties and a dog; and they're always a pleasant diversion.
And I enjoy reading, walking, and bike riding. Oh...and beer. ;-)

How about you?

23. I'm a programmer....
Edited on Wed Oct-22-03 05:39 PM by ixion
so I spend way too much time at the keyboard. Aside from that, though, I enjoy reading and walking, too. I used to ride my bike a great deal, but that is something that has slipped by the wayside in the past couple years.
I guess one of my biggest hobbies these days would be movies. I used to write movie reviews in college, and went so far as to get a film theory minor (among other minors). I'm currently attempting to build the ultimate DVD collection.
One of my favorite things to do is spend time at the beach. I love the ocean. I lived in Florida for about seven years, and grew very fond of watching the ocean, and taking in the sunsets. I live in Texas now, and the lack of a close beach is difficult to bear.

I think that it's very cool that you're a violinist. Do you play with an orchestra? or just for personal fulfilment? :hi:

24. I'm a freelancer
in the Washington DC area. The money isn't great, but it offers more flexibility than a full-time gig would. It's nice to have time for the kids when they need extra.

Where were you in FL? My grandparents lived in Ft. Pierce. We'd visit every summer. It was sooo cool during turtle-nesting season!

25. I lived in serveral places in FL
Key West, Miami, Tampa and Daytona Beach... my absolute favorite was Key West. I sometimes think I should have never left there, but it was difficult to make a living doing anything other than fishing or selling T-Shirts.
Florida, despite it's governor has some really beautiful qualities, and some truly excellent people live there.
I think I've been through Ft. Pierce, but I don't know much about it. It sounds like it would be really cool during the turtle nesting season though. :-)

Also, I understand why you like freelancing. I'm actually considering a move to do something similar with software. It's more risky than working for someone else, but it gives you more freedom as well. I sometimes feel like I'm chained to this keyboard.

What are some of your favorite pieces to play on the violin? Who's your favorite composer?

26. I love it all...
Especially chamber music and symphonic repetoire. I can't imagine limiting myself to one genre...

As to favorite composers, it'd be hard to list them all. Off the top of my head: Dvorak, Ravel, Prokofiev, Debussy, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Haydn, Gershwin, Bach, Vaughan Williams...

Do you enjoy classical music too?

28. yep, I'm a big fan...
Prokofiev, Mozart and Vivaldi are my favorites, but there's very little that I don't enjoy. If I had to pick one that would be my least favorite, I would say Wagner. Too much brute force. Not terrible, mind you, but not as sublime as Beethoven or Chopin, say.

Also, Gershwin's 'American in Paris' is one of my favs as well.

Nice to meet another classical music fan. :hi:

30. I'm playing American in Paris in December...
and I agree about Wagner. For a violinist, he's not much fun to play. And though the melodies are gorgeous, the orchestration's so thick in his operas that singers have to distort their voices just to project...

Do you sing or play an instrument?

31. wow.. cool!
I think that would be a nice gig. I was a singer for 7 or 8 years some time ago -- Swing Choir, Concert Choir and Musicals. I still sing now, but it's for myself. 'Jesus Christ Superstar' is one of my favorites to sing along with, among others, but I have that one nearly memorized. One of the things I'd like to do at some point would be to be in a community theater version of that musical... that one or Man of LaMancha. Either one would be alot of fun, IMHO.

Also, I play drums, though not as much as I would like to. I've been playing drums for about 15 years now. Played with a band for many about half of those years, and still love to play, but never get the chance.

It's kind of funny... my mom played violin, piano, guitar and dulcimer. I took music lessons when I was a kid -- violin, piano and guitar and drums -- but was too impatient. It wasn't until I was 25 that I started to teach myself to play percussion.

How long have you been playing violin? Do you play other instruments?

33. 36 years on Columbus Day...
I started in 4th grade.
I also play viola, a little bit of piano, the bowed psaltry, and played trombone in high school.

I'm a closet torch singer. I've been told I have a good voice for it; but I can't seem to loosen up enough to sing in front of people unless I drink a little too much!

Community theater sounds ike fun...and La Mancha's a great show! I hope your dream comes true!

Gotta get stuff done...see you later! :hi:
