The quickest way to getting stuck in middle management is by stepping on people on your way there. Yes YOU'LL get that first promotion, but after that, the folks you've stepped on will change companies and get promoted over you. Why? Because you were a jackass and other people tend not to forget about that.

Very few people, and probably no one who is not well connected, is going to rise above middle management anyway, so don't give up your youth and health chasing something that isn't going to happen.

3. Another way to get into management. Be incompetent. Get hired

by a company that is too worried to fire anyone. Do a good job for the first year then get incompetent and apply for management jobs. This works very well in data processing. And I am not joking. If you can do the job, they don't want you to leave and if you can't do the job, you get promotions into management to get you out of the way.
