They prayed for me at this morning's church gig...
during the petitions (it was a Catholic service), the priest said, "Let us pray for those who support abortion, that they may come to their senses," or somesuch. Since I support every woman's right to choose, I guess he was referring to people like me, too.

And during the homily, this guy lectured on Oscar Wilde's "illicit homosexual affair". I couldn't look at my colleagues when he mentioned this. We would have all started laughing, and then we'd have gotten our favorite contractor in trouble.

This was a first for me. I never before attended a church service where the celebrant openly spouted off about these controversial topics. I guess it's because most of the churches I've attended believe it's important to mind your own business...

2. that's very disappointing
the part about homosexuality in particular. I understand a moral opposition to abortion. Singling out homosexuals for ridicule is not morally defensible in any way; it is reprehensible. I think most priests are more responsible than that.

5. This was in the ritzy-ditziest area
of Northern VA. It's a pretty good bet that few of those attending live in houses worth less than $650,000.

3. Did they mention priests and minor boys?
I mean, it seems to me that is where the "illicit" part would come in.

B-)

6. It does, doesn't it?
No, of course he didn't mention priests. After all, only priests can rise to the level of Pope, and we all know he's infallible. :eyes:

7. When I went to my niece's first communion awhile ago
The priest did something like that, too. This was St. Pete's in Stevens Point, one of the bluer areas of the state.

8. there is no need to inject politics into a first communion...
that kind of stuff gets on my nerves. I went to my little cousin's first communion on Saturday and the service was all about the children as it should have been.

I've been rather fortunate that the priest does not get too political from the pulpit, granted I don't get to church often, but I've liked what I've heard so far

9. Papal infallibility is such an important element of RC Church dogma
Unless they elect someone liberal after Benedict croaks, there's bound to be a serious split.

11. It was a gig.....
At least I was getting paid to listen to him condemn me and my friends. If it was my parish, I would've walked out.

12. Are they praying for the kids that were abused by pedophile priests?
Or for the priests so that they can "Come to their senses"?
I so glad that I left the RC church over 30 years ago.
