I am NOT having a garage sale.

For the last few weeks I've been getting ready for a garage sale. We have so much accumulated stuff - you know how it goes. And we have the old furniture, the baby equipment, the outgrown clothes and toys, kitchen and household items, books, records, electronics. So much crap just taking up space.

I've already had to change the date twice due to conflicts. There's only one free Saturday left before June, and the June weekends are full of fun things like parades and festivals. Who wants to do a garage sale then?

As I've been sorting and cleaning and pricing, I thought about giving up an entire Saturday while people paw through my things and try to nickel and dime me down on prices that are already lower than most people ask for at garage sales.

I remembered what a pain in the ass it is to hold a garage sale.

I started to get cranky and out of sorts, dreading having to do it.

And then I had an epiphany.

I do not have to do it.

I don't have to have a garage sale. So simple, isn't it? Why didn't I think of it before? We can pack up and haul all of the stuff to a suitable charitable organization and take the tax deduction instead. And so many more people benefit!

Why am I so slow?

1. You can do that - donating for tax break or

ask your local county party if they want to have the yard sale for you.

I'm about to hold one at my house for our party. Donate a few of your things and have other members donate too. Any $$$ made will be going to our local party for expenses for next year's races.

2. I loathe garage sales. Won't do it.

I'd rather donate all my useful stuff to Salvation Army or St. Vincent DePaul. Why spend a perfectly good day, sitting in my yard, arguing about whether the broken toaster should cost a dime or a nickel?

If I did have a sale, I would place a sign in front of all the crap:
"Everything's a quarter. You buy it, you haul it. Honor System."

Then I could put a coffee can out for their quarters, leave for the day, and let the chips fall where they may.

3. Goodwill Yes. Salvation Army NO!

The 2000 coup got the Salvation Army some friends in high places.
Did the Salvation Army ask the government to do more for the poor?

NO!

They asked to be allowed to discriminate against gays and people of other religions.

They will never get anything from me again.

4. I don't blame you...

Actually, my Mom and I have sold at the flea market here in Albuquerque. You pay like $8 to get in and sell. There are so many people that we can sell 3/4 of what we brought and bring in $300+ in only 4 hours.

5. BINGO. I schlepped it ALL OFF to Goodwill.. and VIOLA, it was DONE.

No more sorting, pricing, setting out, displaying, negotiating -- NO MORE HASSLE. Suddenly the stuff was just GONE.

6. besides that, the newspaper ad cost and cleaning the stuff, etc

one time I did it. I made next to $ zero. Meanwhile a neighbor woman asked to join me and she sold almost all her stuff. She has 3 boys and she had all these toys and kid clothes. She was selling all that stuff and I was selling nothing. I will never do a garage sale again.
