18. Another vote for rubbish
This is an unacceptable cultural bias, I feel so oppressed by this anglophobia (just in case you were thinking of taking this seriously - :sarcasm: )

11. I learned: Garbage is wet, trash is dry.
We used to have separate pickups for garbage (kitchen waste). I guess garbage disposals ended all that.

12. I use them interchangeably.
But I'm with Dolo Amber - "rubbish" is a very aesthetically pleasing word.

14. Uplifting actually.
Garbage day means that I'm casting off the old and making way for the new. There's nothing more cathartic to me than to rummage through some old things I don't want or need any longer and put them in the garbage or take them to Goodwill.

16. I consider "trash" to be the clean, dry, stuff that can't be recycled
Edited on Tue May-10-05 10:19 AM by slackmaster
To me garbage is the stuff I put in my compost pile.

The other categories are greenery that the city picks up (e.g. tree trimmings too small to be used as fire wood), recyclables (plastic, glass, cans, unsoiled paper) and toxic waste (metal chips, used batteries, oily rags, pesticide containers, etc.)

I accumulate toxic waste until I have a full box, then take it to a toxic waste facility. I sell recycleables that are worth the hassle, and give the rest to the city (we have curbside pickup). After composting the garbage that leaves about half a tall kitchen trash bag of stuff (trash and non-compostable garbage like meat drippings and bones) to go into the landfill per week.

Actually my trash volume has been larger than that recently. I trimmed a Mexican fan palm, and the city won't accept the fronds as greenery because it jams the chipper/shredder. Same with ice plant. So functionally those items are trash as well.
