Lauren Bush: A Vegetarian?
I heard on the radio yesterday that Lauren Bush, the supermodel daughter of Neil Bush, is a vegetarian. The reason I point that out is because I have never met or heard of a right wing vegetarian before. Could it be that maybe Luaren does not share her family's politics?

author of Dominion, The Power of Man, The Suffering of Animals, And The Call to Mercy is a longtime republican operative and loyal Bush speechwriter.

People concerned about animal welfare come from all points of the political spectrum, in my opinion, it's not just a leftist issue. :)

2. several neo cons I know ARE vegans
and other sorts of vegetarians. In each of these cases (in two regions of the country I have lived in during the past five years) this was not a case of philosophy so much as it was of "calories" and they ran the gamut of strict vegans to milk or fish added vegetarians. The "enemy" was animal fat as I so, so, so often heard.

Each of them believed that "fat" was evil and that a vegetarian diet was the key to thinness. Both men and women were among the six my husband and I could quickly name. So...you probably are grasping at straws here as she is a model and weight is a preoccupation for that career path.

6. Surely. MOST vegetarians are liberals
As I have never heard conservative elites say anything positive about vegetarians.

say anything nice about being vegan or vegetarian.

I know dems that are veggies and repugs that are veggies.

Some issues cross political boundaries. Heck, even my right wing father recycles and is an environmentalist

5. I've heard rumblings that she is a closet liberal
I've heard the same thing about Jenna Bush, as well, which is one reason I don't blow shit on her or her sister. They can't help that they were born into that fucked-up family.

7. Not only that but she was voted one of "PETA's sexiest vegitarians"
<snip>
Los Angeles — Hollywood Homicide hunk Josh Hartnett and model and first niece Lauren Bush have won PETA’s 2003 "Sexiest Vegetarians Alive" poll, narrowly edging out a host of other veggie hotties, including Jude Law, Pamela Anderson, John Corbett, Common, Kelly Osbourne, Sir Ian McKellen, and Russell Simmons and previous winners Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman, and Shania Twain.

8. plenty of right-wing vegetarians and animal rights people
The only animal rights extremist I have known personally was a staunch Republican. I am convinced that many of the nuttier animal rights people are right-wing — lots of Barbara Bush-type evil old ladies hate people but love their little toy poodle. Many right-wingers seem to go for restrictive food regimens along with their propensity for quack remedies.

As for Lauren — who knows?

9. hitler was a vegetarian
hitler and many nazis were vegetarians. some fundamentalists are too. food fascism, as with regular fascism, has a lot to do with power and control, feelings of superiority < iam better than you are because i am "purer" for not eating meat or whatever> and may have nothing to do with concerns about animals, people or the environment.

15. Hitler was a 'primarily' a vegetarian because he had gastric problems
<snip>
Hitler's diet was primarily vegetarian throughout the latter part of his life; however, he didn't adopt a vegetarian diet for moral reasons, but because he suffered from gastric problems

Big difference between someone that does it out of love for animals and one that does it for health reasons.

17. hitler's vegetarianism
partially true. his vegetarianism was connected with his obessession with purity--he was terrified of germs and things he perceived to be contaminants including the the possibility of jewish ancestry in his own family. he was the compulsive hand washer type and vegetarianism was part of the maintenence of purity--aryan or otherwise <see peter gay's psychobiography of hitler> this phenomenon is common among some food faddists/fascist who are obssessively concerned about their health and has nothing to do with concerne for animals.

16. It isn't
it has nothing to do with political parties although if you support animal rights or welfare the left is far more agreeable.

12. There are a lot of right-wing vegetarians
I know several.

It's mainly a health concern (she's a model) than worrying about some animals.
