1. PETA are a bunch of fucking idiots
Sometimes they do good, and I'd be happy to give them my money. But they can be extremist loony-tune idiots sometimes.

2. A Peta thread...

There's a 50 50 chance this isn't going to end up good....

On topic, I don't like the idea, but then again, I have no problem with fishing or eating fish so that's of course the reason why. However, are they going to only target this fish, or are they going to be equal and demand all fish not be fished for. I guess maybe they think they'll succeed in just getting one specific fish banned easier than saying, lets ban all fishing? I don't know, I don't agree either way, but really this isn't shocking or surprising. They are People for the Ethnical Treatment of Animals, agree or disagree with them, they will attempt things like this.

Edit: I should point out I didn't actually read the article cause it wants me to register, and I just don't feel like doing so at the times, so I'll admit that my thought above is not a completely informed thought. Thought I should be honest and put that here.

RE-Edit: Okay now the article works for me.. odd... in any case I still think it shouldn't be banned.

3. Considering the shape that the Alaskan salmon population is in,
I'm all for it. Global climate change, and overfishing is wreaking havoc on the salmon population, and giving them a respite is a good thing.

Love the quote by the salmon fisherman...
"I only catch the stupid ones. I wouldn't be able to catch the smart ones anyway. I'm trying to weed out the gene pool".

4. Good response and why don't I ever hear of PEVA (vegetables)?
A couple of people in Southeast Alaska's commercial fishing industry contacted Friday wouldn't dignify PETA's request with a response. But after learning the basis of the group's argument for ending the fisheries, Juneau salmon troller Mark Stopha had a quick riposte.

"I only catch the stupid ones," Stopha said. "I wouldn't be able to catch the smart ones, anyway."

"I'm trying to weed out the gene pool," he added.

5. There is nothing like hooking a chinook
Especially on medium tackle. Those things fight like crazy and taste real good.

6. I have a brother that lives in Alaska.
He can subsistence fish - like go out, use a net, and scoop up many many fish at once. He converted an old refrigerator to a smoker last year.

If the salmon runs aren't endangered, I don't see this getting much more than a dismissive wave of the hand.

PETA would really be appalled at the number of other animals that can be legally killed each year in Alaska.
