What a strange word... penis.
It sounds more like an engineering apparatus than a human body part. The way it is spelled and the way it sounds... PEE-nis. Looks like it should be on an invoice for an air conditioner parts manufacturer or something.

2. A common misspelling too.
As in "My penis red",
instead of
"My pen is red".

5. It's always sounded like a diminutive to me
Penis - sounds like something very small. Now shlong, on the other hand....

6. It actually originated as a euphamism -
in latin, it originally meant "tail". The older word was "mentula". So, if you go by the actual connotation, "mentula" is latin for english "penis", but latin "penis" would be better translated as, maybe "prick".

8. Kids say the darndest things dept.
I was over at the brother in law's place, back when my nephew was around four or so. My in-laws were all for sex ed, early and often, and had gotten started on the basics, names for the anatomy.

My little nephew got matters slightly confused. We were out on the deck, and he pointed at the Morning Star saying "Look mommy, the planet Penis!"

Yes, we all died laughing.
