Truthfully, though, I would return it. And i would write a letter to go with it that says "returned by a democratic Christ-loving PATRIOT".

I'd also notify the media that I was returning the wallet, and I was returning it because I was raised with good liberal democrat-voting values that say stealing is wrong in all situations, and that as a good American Citizen it is my duty, and my pleasure, to return something that was lost.

96. I really doubt that.
I'm under the distinct impression that when the thousand dollar bill was withdrawn from circulation, they were destroyed as they came into Govt hands. The ones still out there are in the hands of collectors. They aren't actually legally tender any more.

So every time I hear someone blithely talking about bills larger than a 100 dollar bill, I go a little crazy.

98. the larger bills are used for intra-government transactions
they are legal tender in the sense that the government will exchange the bills for you, and also in the more direct sense for intra-government purposes.

but you're right, they're not legal tender in the "for all debts, public and private" sense. only public (government) applies now.

and my original post we more in jest than anything else....

101. Are you sure they're actually used intra-governmentally?
I know that once upon a time there were very large bills, like $10,000 denominations that were used that way, but I understood that these days it was all electronic.

Oh, well. I actually understand the point of the original post was what would any of us do if we found a very large sum that clearly belonged to that man. Heck, even as much as a few dollars could be extremely tempting to lots of people.

Several weeks ago, I had a twenty dollar bill snatched away from by by strong winds, and about a week later a twenty materialized in my mailbox. I never told anyone of the first loss, nor of the second gain. I know that no one could have seen me lose the first bill and decide to replace it anonymously, but it was quite odd. and I have no idea where the "replacement" came from.

53. I'd give it back.
A couple of weeks ago, I was in town, and noticed a $100 bill flutter to the ground as a young woman turned a corner and started opening the door to a shop - I shouted at her to stop as I picked up the money and said 'I think you dropped this'. The astonished look on her face as she realized that a, she had lost the bill, and b, someone had picked it up, and c, was giving it back to her instead of taking it was chilling.

We are better than they. We're the one's with real morals. So handing the money back, regardless of whose it was, is for me the only option. But I wouldn't be averse to informing the press about it to show an example of real morals in contrast to Cheney's.

A lot of money has been made the easy way, but that's his bad karma. It's about the tainted money thing mentioned earlier.

Setting up a college fund with tainted money isn't real wonderful, but that's one of the cases where being an oppurtunist can help, since having an college education will enable you to significant difference and not having any generally - unless you are able to excel in a certain subject - means that you are stuck on the bottom.

If you give it to charity then the charity assumes that it is properly earned money, but it is now double tainted money.

65. Shred it, people were killed for that POS's blood money.

I would say burn it but that will contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer.

Shred the license too.

75. OK, I'd keep it. No brainer for me.
Edited on Wed May-18-05 10:45 AM by valis
The only reason I'd give it back to somebody is if I suspected they needed it. If I KNOW they don't need it because they are already wealthy, then there is no way in hell I'd give it back (especially, if I know the owner is a crook).

86. That $150K is totally blood-soaked and loaded with bad karma.
As tempting as it would be to pocket it, I wouldn't want it. I'd have the dollar amount certified (so I couldn't be accused of bagging the $$$ after the fact), and send the whole wallet and its contents back to the miserable SOB.

valis, this is actually a very, very good thought-question!

Edited on Wed May-18-05 01:21 PM by valis
Doesn't that balance things out? For example, give it to people who need surgery and they cannot afford it... Just wondering...

88. It will make things worse
Because you will not inform the people who you give the money to that it has a dubious background. It may be good karma for them but not for you. Karma is action + intention. So both the action and the intention are wrong.

If you found $100 and put it in your pocket and spend it and later one you felt guilty and couldn't repair it with the original person then giving $100 to charity would balance it out again, because the action + intention would be good in that case.

103. I returned a wallet once that only had $20 in it
and the guy accused me of stealing the rest of his money! now that's what karma got me.

I told him that if he thought I stole something from him then call the cops, but of course the jackass didn't because he knew he was full of shit.
