4. Other: Went to a doctor, who treated me with dry ice and sulphur --

burned my skin a bit each treatment, but I don't have any scars. The whole thing went away when I was about 20 years old. I feel so bad for those people who have cystic acne.

The prescription drug Accutane was once touted as a good treatment, but many youngsters have died as suicides while taking the drug. On CSPAN a week ago, I heard one of the Congressional representatives urging the FDA to ban the drug. He had lost his son to suicide. Very emotional....

7. Yes. What a sad story, Jonathan. He had a chart showing the --
brain normally and the brain on Accutane.

Very alarming.

6. Other: Accutane

I took it in late '84 and early '85 (it got FDA approval in '82, so I was probably among the first to do so). I had the regular course of treatment followed by a second, shorter one to get rid of a few stubborn outbreaks that kept recurring.

Other than some very faint scarring as a result of some pre-treatment acne and a larger scar an inch or so below the base of my skull due to an overzealous dermatologist injecting medication directly into a clustered outbreak (think of a burn scar, only this burn was from the inside out), you'd never know I had severe acne as a teenager.

Edit: I still use an unscented, dye-free soap on my face; the acne that I had was exacerbated by the fact that my skin is very sensitive. I couldn't use conventional, over-the-counter, topical treatments like Clearasil at all--they actually made the acne worse, believe it or not.

11. Remember Stridex Medicated Pads?????
Those alcohol-soaked, round-shaped flannel thingies that you rubbed all over your face, and would reveal that your mug was dirtier than an oil slick? :)

Fortunately, my dermatological crises in high school were few and far between.
