A DU clothesdrive for the poorer neighborhoods hit by fire?
Was doing my usual sorting of clothes that baby blm outgrew when it struck me that those in neighborhoods who are effected (and the least likely to be covered by insurance) are going to be very much in need of all sizes of clothing.

Any SoCal DUers interested in providing an address where we can donate clothing specifically for those victims?

3. I don't know...was thinking more along the lines
of something more DU oriented. Maybe find a few different churches or charities who serve the poorest areas?

5. in San Diego, they are asking not for clothes but money
Edited on Mon Oct-27-03 08:02 PM by amazona
Take it for what it is worth but the TV news stations here are saying it is much better to donate money.

That said, they also say that people are bringing needed items to Qualcomm Stadium where many evacuees are gathering to find out information about shelters. Food is being supplied by restaurant owners. PetSmart brought out pet food. There was some mention made about it would be helpful if people could donate diapers and some other baby items, so maybe the baby clothes would be OK.

For the most part, what people need at the moment is money and information on filing insurance claims, apparently.

Red Cross said SPECIFICALLY just to call if you can donate MONEY. For the food, clothes, etc. it sounds like individuals are just bringing the items to Qualcomm and perhaps other shelters too -- they are trying to get people away from Qualcomm, as it is very unsafe because of the poor air quality. If you come over here with donations, wear a respirator mask and keep the air conditioner on your car on recirculate.

Will gladly send some money. When the shelters or churches down there do start collecting items, could you please post an address for those of who are ready to send boxes?

I can add packages of diapers and wipes, too.

11. St. Vincent De Paul's collecting items
I just saw on TV where the local St. Vincent De Paul's is collecting items such as clothes to distribute in the area. I don't have an address for them however.

I have the impression that, because of the weight of clothes and the high cost of shipping, they do not necessarily expect people to be mailing old clothes out here. It might be cheaper for people who want to donate to send a check to Red Cross with the comment on the check that it is for San Diego relief. But for locals who have items like baby clothes to distribute they have said that St. Vincent's can accept and distribute them.

13. I ship boxes of clothes all the time.
It's never been more than 8 bucks. St. Vincent DePaul's would be a good place to send. An address would be great when they give one. Any Hispanic churches collecting?

16. Sorry you felt that way...I was on two wavelengths -
One to send money and another to send clothes. This thread isn't just for me. Hopefully it's for many more than just me. So, I imagine the address you provided is guiding those who lurk, too, and very much appreciate your posting the address..

Had places where you could donate money to San Diego Fire Relief, of course I donated but they raised over 30,000 dollars that night.
