Longhorn to be delayed until 2006 (that's a new computer operating system)
That's Microsoft's new TCPA-ridden OS.

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,1368390,00.asp?kc=ETRSS02129TX1K0000532

The link's review lacks info on TCPA (naturally, mustn't scare off the potential customer base which sure as hell won't include me), but goes into detail about what's to come.

The OS, currently, is 5GB in size. Get that down to below 1GB and I'll be happy. But what, you say? WinXP is already 1.5GB in size?

The GUI now uses DirectX (pity they didn't use OpenGL, which is superior, but MS would NEVER EVER, EVER be efficient in their coding)

It runs very slowly on a P4 running at 3.2GHz and people commented that even an ATi Radeon 9800 would be a minimum requirement.

Microsoft is creating a new file system based on relational database concepts for fast searching (called "WinFS", how unoriginal and bland), which so far appears to be very buggy (so don't expect me to use it when it comes out...) (And don't forget th bug in the current MS Indexing Service for Win2k or XP that starts to CORRUPT files when the index file becomes 4 GB in size...)

If MS scares people into the realm of thin client computing because of this monstrosity... :scared:

No Mac or Linux posts please, just limit yourself to anti-MS comments (or even pro-MS comments if you're that sad) and everything will remain cool and flame-free! :D

3. Longhorn?
What is up with all this Texas stuff. I been noticing Texas this and Texas that.

Anyhow, I think my next operating system will be Linux (unless they rule the thing that makes it work unconstiutional). I am no computer whiz, but it seems as though all the viruses lately are targeted at Windows operating systems.

4. Why would an OS need to be multiple Gigabytes?
ferheavensakes, my old Atari 800 had a 16 kilobyte operating system that worked reasonably well.

5. WinFS could be cool
but the rest of the Longhorn innovations make me shrug and say "whatever".

I wonder what happened to that Palladium thing they were working on, I haven't heard about it in a long time.

6. 3 years from now..
a P4 3.2 GHz chip will look like a PII 350MHz looks now. I think they are doing the same thing they did with Windows 2000. It took them forever to get it out and in the end they only released it after yanking a lot of the stuff out.

7. A few points
The "the OS takes 5GB for a full install" argument is lame and outdated. All modern consumer OS's (and their related utility software) are multi-gigabyte in size and they're going to continue to get larger in the future. Storage is dirt cheap, it's a moot point.

OpenGL is not superior to DirectX, unless you're just talking about it being open source, which is a slight advantage in theory. Programming DirectX is very easy and it's the only wrapper that takes full advantage of modern video card chipsets. It's also significantly faster than OpenGL because the hardware and software are often built for each other. Case in point, 3D Studio Max has the option of running in OpenGL or DirectX. DirectX mode is much, much faster on a mid-range vid card. No contest.

Debug code always causes early versions of OS's run slowly. Remember early versions of OSX? Moot point.

That said. I HATE Windows XP and I love Windows 2000. I prefer the OS to stay out of the way and not sacrifice performance for eye candy. MS has lots of work to do to keep me as a customer after XP.
