But then again, he was pretty good with the bat for the Sox...they might not have reached the Series without him...had 102 RBI's that year, 110 in 1985...just one, lousy flub...
When he was with the Cubs, he was just fine. A heckuva hitter and he wasn't a bad fielder then either. He played the game the way it is supposed to be played, that is he hustled all the time.
The year he'd boot that grounder in the World Series. Most memorably, he chewed a combination of bubble gum and chewing tobacco and when he'd lean over to answer a question (this was in the visitors' dugout at Tiger Stadium during pre-game batting practice), his breath would make your hair curl. But I appreciate that Bill Buckner took time out to talk with this reporter on my first day of covering major-league anything. That was very generous of him. John Bad breath or not.
