4. Its not going to be decided until February - March sweeps

TV Guide reported that the election will be moved to the spring sweeps period.

In my mind, the whole issue on who will win will be decided by the first ratings book. Alan Alda has signed on for the full season and his contract is renewable by the producers if he wins the election, as is Smits' contract. The episodes are shot about 8 weeks in advance of airing. I would expect February sweeps episodes to be in the can just before the December Holidays hiatus. This also puts filming of the winner after the November sweeps book comes out.

Now I am not suggesting that the ratings for either Smits or Alda will effect who gets elected, they have done research on that already. The issue is that Alda has said in the past he does not want to commit to a full time series. If the ratings are great, there will be another season of the West Wing, and Alda does not want to do it. Smits does want to do it. If the ratings tank, there will not be another season. I can easily see Alda winning, and the last 5-6 episodes taking each of the main characters out of the west wing.

but last season was as good as the third, which was the last good season before it jumped. I got back into it last year. I think it will be good again. The spoiler boards are flying with info and it looks to be good.

Does this mean they're not doing any episodes that reflect the time?
Don't they usually do a "Holiday" episode? They won't be able to do one this year in late December, 'cause that would be after the election, which isn't going to take place until February sweeps.
Ugh, my head is spinning.
And I'll tell you, if Vinick wins, I'm away from the show entirely. I already have a fictional Republican administration to watch if I really want to. I don't need two. (Although Alda is playing the character great, he's far too unbelievable. A Republican Presidential Nom. who doesn't go to church? Not in this day and age.)

9. Vinivk wil only win if the series is over

You won't have to watch it. Alda does not want to commit to 20+ episodes per year. IF Alda wins, they will use the last few episodes to wrap it up. Charlie, Zoe, POTUS and Mrs/Dr. Bartlet only signed up for a handful of episodes this season anyway, so it will be mostly Vinick adn Santos all season.
