Do you think Thomas Kinkade think his own "art" sucks?
Edited on Sun Sep-25-05 11:34 AM by Oregonian
When he paints one of his monstrosities filled with little lit-up cottages, cobblestone paths, lighthouses, spilling gardens, country churches, and other nausea-producing crap, does he step back and think: "Wow. I am Matisse's peer!" or does he think: "Here's another steaming pile that the dumb Parade-magazine reading masses will buy ... Bwa ha ha!"

Edited because I originally wrote "spilling garbage" instead of "spilling gardens" -- ha!

1. I am sure that he cries while painting
all the while thinking, "I can't believe I'm gonna sell this crapola and make another million......sob......"

3. No, I bet he thinks it's brilliant.
Not groundbreaking or anything, but successful and therefore, brilliant.

Here's Thomas drunk with his friends: "My shit's sold at Avon parties man. You know how many people go to those things? I got work in half the homes in America. How many homes does Picasso hang in? I rest my case."

He has to think this way or else he will be crushed by his own crapitude. (that's a new word I made up just for Tom).

6. I like that word. I can just imagine a new ad at the back of magazines
"Can you be an artist who rips off middle America? Draw this cottage and send it to this address. We'll measure your craptitude and, if you qualify, you too can begin your career in Schlock."

8. Well, okay, not THAT.
Like all great art, that piece is inspired, and brings up feelings in myself I never knew I had. Feelings like, like, I want to throw myself in front of a tarring machine on the freeway, or like, I wish I had never been born, or, like Oedipus, I want to gouge out my own eyes ...

It sucks a lot. It could suck a basketball through a garden hose; it could suck-start a B-52 in Fairbanks in January. Its suckingness is comparable to that of Precious Moments figurines. But then, what do I know about Art?

He laughs all the way to the bank.

Pretty soon nobody will buy his crap anymore. He will have glutted the market. Then we can laugh.

9. I want to see his version of Dogs Playing Poker with Velvet Elvis.
Just to see how crappy he can really be.

That would be a work of sheer crap that would make him the Ed Wood of Art.

I mean HUGH!!11!1 eyes that made him look waif-like? And could there be a scary-looking colorful clown in the background?

It truely amazes me how many of these freeper-leader types have a real contempt for their audience/minions.

14. It's really extreme marketing. You can get wedding invitations
with his shit on it now also.

I suppose it is possible that there are Order of Service brochures for funerals that have his stuff on them also.

I've also seen Christmas stuff, banners, lamps, mugs, clocks, train sets and figurines. I suppose someone will eventually nominate that the US capitol be painted with his crap on it.

17. I think he is very serious about his art, and that he truly thinks of it
as a ministry and as something that proclaims the glory of God.

I think he's totally deluded about it, and I don't think he ever exercises or bothers with any sense of self-critique (artistic, nor, especially, theologically), but that's a hallmark of the fundamentalist set not to bother with things like self-critique. He is of a deluded and false-teaching branch of Christianity that believes 1950s nostalgia is akin to faithfulness, that America and God are inseparable, that war, when waged by America, is the hand of God, and that life should be "nice" and "pretty" because God is, gosh, just so darn nice and pretty and just so loving and, gosh, just so, so, so, so filled with blessings of material wealth to his really faithful.

I think he's deluded and convinced himself that every 5000 print limited edition abomination is one step closer to the bringing in of the Kingdom of God, and that the prices he asks for them are fair, normal, not excessive, and just.

He is from a brand/sect/false-cult of Christianity that is filled with delusion and falsehoods and a complete inability, even fear, toward self-critique.

18. "No one can serve two masters."
"Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."

And yet Thomas kinkade has made a career by exploiting the name of God for money.

25. I'd like to see a Kinkade on the edge
Force him to paint some gothic castles, or the council of Hell. The rape of Lucretia, perhaps.

Hell, if Kinkade is a right-wing evangelical, he's already joined the Dark Side. So let 'em put some "Sith" in his renderings.

Other than the fact that if you look at a bunch of his paintings together you realize they are all the same, what's the deal with him...is he a republican?

(Well, was forced to because of his work.) He said he was a huge asshole. I don't think he much cares if his art sucks or what people think of him. From what I hear, he sounds like a greedy ego-maniac who laughs all the way to the bank while others do the actual "work".
