Optimism Challenge
I'm 32, my wife is pregnant, and I've just lost my job. Does anyone else's future look as rosy as mine? Let's compare. Whoever can come up with a more fortuitous set of circumstances to be in wins a prize... my place in the queue at the soup kitchen!

1. I had a patient at the hospital,
30 years old, just went to hospice so she can die of cancer.

I have another patient, 42, who will die of cancer in a few days.

have another couple, early 30s, their baby of five months has been in the hospital for two months undergoing chemo for leukemia.

Not to belittle your situation at all - you're in a shitty, miserable spot as well, and I don't envy you at all - but you asked about people in other bad situations.

3. Sobering
Well, that blew my boat right out of the water. I wasn't expecting a cancer/Rwandan village masssacre story until about 4th or 5th post. The situations you describe are truly heartbreaking. There on a totally different level of tradgedy to my hap.

Thanks for sharing that with me.

2. Well....
You are bringing a new person in the world which is a wonderful thing. There are ways to get free medical care for expecting mothers and help after the baby is born. If your wife had an illness that needed medical treatment, it would be much scarier.

I'm 32, unemployed, single, and there is no one to help me, so I understand how horrible your situation is. I'll send some good karma your way. :)

4. Big hugs
Thanks for the karma. It's the nicest thing anyone's given me all week.

5. Screw fortuitous circumstances,
where do you want your life to lead you? Map the course, plot it out and pursue it. Part of achieving a goal requires you pursue it and create the circumstances which allow you to achieve it.

As far as optimism, there is little I can think of which is as optimistic as a baby. The cries and smiles of a newborn reshapes the world.

It sounds like you're in a hard spot. Don't let the shadows distract you from the light.
