3. Louisiana recipe
Blackened alligator, cooked like blackened redfish. But you should only use the tail meat, the belly is too tough. Tastes like chicken (really).

8. Not a recipe, but cultural difference

I lived in Japan for almost two years; I was in the U.S. Navy at the time.

The little town outside the base is called Yokosuka. It's not exactly one of those towns that exist solely to support the base. In other words, it has the normal number of bars that a town of its size should have.

They also have a Shakey's Pizza.

Shakey's had a pizza buffet during lunch. I'd go every now and then. My first visit, I discovered that the Japanese like slightly different topings on their pizza. The biggest difference was the addition of corn and seaweed. A corn pizza really does not hit the spot.

Now, in Sydney, I was at the zoo and I ordered a cheeseburger from a concession stand. I pulled off the bun so I could add some condiments when I noticed something...odd. It was a vegetable of some kind. I sort of poked it and couldn't figure out what it was. I finally realized that it was a beet!

I went back to the concession stand and asked if the burger was supposed to come with the beet, or had it been a horrible mistake.

The Ausies did not have a clue as to what I was talking about. I actually had to show them the burger: "There! The beet! Why is there a beet on my hamburger?"

"Oh, the BEET ROOT," said the Ausie. "Yes, it's supposed to be there."

I did not eat the beet.

Finally, at Subic Bay, Philippines, I purchased meat on a stick from a street vendor.

IF YOU ARE IN A THIRD-WORLD COUNTRY, ASK WHAT THE MEAT IS BEFORE YOU BUY IT!

I'm pretty sure it was dog or monkey. It wasn't chicken and it wasn't beef. It was something...else. But tasty. I really hope it wasn't people.
