Life without cable (make it stop)
Edited on Mon Jul-07-03 07:41 PM by nu_duer
I thought cable sucked when I had it. I've been "over the air" only for about two months now. Personal finances and my disgust with the cable "news" nets and the refusal by Comcast to air anti-invasion messages before the slaughter began all played a part in my saying goodbye to cable.

Now, I am faced with this lineup tonight, which could be any night:

Lame "reality" show (Fear Factor)
Lame sitcom (Lopez)
Lame sitcom (Yes Dear)
"Antiques Roadshow"
Lame "reality" show (Anything for Love)
Lame sitcom (The Parkers)

and at 9:00 (ET), more of the same, with lame dramas making an appearance.

Broadcast TV (w/ very very few exceptions) s-u-x!

On the bright side - I did find an "accelerated" dail-up net service for $12mo. that I am really impressed with. Not as fast as cable, but way faster than dial-up.

And I must mention that I do, thank God, get the Simpsons/King of the Hill hour at 6pm and then again at 10pm. I may very well owe my sanity to the Springfield and Arlen crowd.

But I'm not sure I can get by without Cspan and Sci-Fi and Comedy Central and Bravo and Local on the 8s.

*sigh*

Ok, I'm done.

1. Ever since I got my new computer, my TV watching has dropped.
I feel that as long as you have the internet, the loss of cable TV is not really that bad of an issue, especially if you have the Simpsons and KOTH on at 6 and 10. I hate KOTH myself, but to each his own.

The internet, in my mind, makes up for any lost cable TV. I rarely watch TV nowadays. And I used to watch it CONSTANTLY.

2. I'm in the same boat

Comcast cable was cancelled about 2 months ago due to lack of finances. Luckily since I have a cable modem I still get a few channels that they can't filter out. Comedy Central and CSPAN-2 are among them. I don't know what I'd do without the Daily Show. The rest, I don't miss at all.

On edit: The 7-10pm prime time crap slot is filled nicely with Mike Malloy.

5. Welcome to my world
Which is probably why I spend way too much time on DU. But time on DU is better than watching crap cable, anyway.

7. I now live totally without a TV in my house.
I do not miss it. Of course I'm glued to the internet, but that's somehow different. :-)

9. Antiques Roadshow is great!
At least there was one good choice. Usually PBS has the best offering regardless. At least it's educational.

Why don't you just hook up the VCR or DVD player and rent videos. Then you can watch whatever you like whenever you like.

We have satellite TV (cancelled the cable 2 years ago) but even so we almost only watch PBS or DVDs.

10. I'd really like to be supportive, but...
...your post is kind of pathetic, you know? Who gives a rat's buttocks what sorts of "shows" there are to "watch" on the tube?

OK, I don't mean to be harsh, but suck it up. Live, instead of watching. It's fun. Read a book. Listen to music while you peruse DU. Take a walk in your neighborhood. Ride a bike. Go to the closest bar and have a beer with a stranger. TV sucks. It's the plug-in drug, and far more narcotic than ANYTHING else out there.
