AMAZING THANKS to DU'ers who Recommended "Harold and Maude."
It's a great movie...and seemed "fresh today" even after all these years since.

I would put it in a category of "CULT MOVIE" ..Donnie Darko.......

But...whatever...you post early 70's DU'ers might want to take a look at this movie....it's way KOOL and VERY FUNNY...in a DARK sort of way.

BTW: It seems "Sam Goodey's has the DVD" as a FEATURE!

So those of us recommending it aren't ALL LOONIES...about some old movie. :D

It's good. But, you can still rent instead of BUY at Hollywood Video if you have one near you........A GOOD WATCH...and Cat Stephen's background songs are worth the listen....

5. Thanks.......I'm late to t hat one ...but a couple of Du'er Recomended and
as with most of what our DU'ers recommend..it was a really good one.

It didn't seem dated to me......and had a wonderful message...About Death and YOU ARE NOT DEAD!

For some reason that really hit home to me right now.........It's a really Cool movie more on the "Darko" theme.......but SPIRITUAL...in a way I really don't want to get into.

A good rental......anyway.....

6. And I just adored Ruth Gordon
Two other movies that she was great in that aren't quite as good are My Bodyguard and Where's Poppa with George Segal which is quite funny but dated.

Poor Bud Cort didn't have much of a career after that.

There really isn't a Hal Ashby movie that isn't good, though.

17. I love My Bodyguard too
My mom wanted that to be our 8th grade movie (where we got to miss class and watch a film in the auditorium). However, the principal and other fundie parents thought the language was inappropriate for 8th graders. :eyes:

Instead, we watched The Swarm. :wtf:

27. That's a fun one too, I hadn't thought of it in years, but when I was
looking at the free On-Demand movies on Comcast a few weeks back, it was on the list, so I watched it for free, and it was just as fun as I remembered it being when I was a kid :)

15. BTW: NSMA.........I did a Google on Ruth Gordon when I came home...
and what one can read about here is AWESOME! Writing her own script with her hubby Garson Kanen from way back when...some great movies there.

I remembered some of the movies being an old movie lover..but it still is a great Google for her and Garson.

Thanks!

19. Ruth Gordon's in "My Bodyguard" too--she's the nutso grandma.
"Bat!" "Bat!" (When she's attacking Chris Makepeace.) Then her son comes in, and you think she's completely dotty. Then much later, there's an amazing scene in a restaurant with Adam Baldwin where she notices the scars on his wrists, and she plays it with such tenderness and kindness it brings tears to the eyes. Definitely worth a rental. (And Joan Cusack, who's about 14, plays a girl named Shelly with the same warmth and crack comic timing she still has 26 years later.)

I remember when somebody first described it to me how excited I was. I must upgrade my copy to DVD one of these days.

7. It's really good......even our most "curmudgeonesk" DU'ers couldn't find
fault with it.....Just IMHO.......It's a MUST RENT...heck it was "3Bucks" and you all might have some "freebees" at you Video Place.

I got it at "Hollywood Video" rentals. Our "Blockbuster store" is sort of all into "Video Game" and doesn't have much selection.
 It's out there at your "Alternative Video Store."

9. BTW... Beautiful story of "Love Between the Ages" and how sometimes
Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 10:29 PM by KoKo01
"what we seek" maybe AHEAD of US and not what we live with in our contemporaries. That she takes "pills to die" on her Wonderful 80th...is a metphore that she knew she had to "set him free."

It's really beautiful as a story between the very old and the very young and the meeting of minds between "Free Spirits.:

I hope I will be like the character Ruth Gordon portrayed in that sometimes being "feaky and planting trees and doing dances and musicology might be important to someone WAY BEHIND ME....on this planet.

It's Kool..........

23. I hate it with a passion.
Perhaps b/c when I got home from seeing it, there was a message on my answering machine that my grandma had just died, probably during the hour or two I was at the damn movie.

Hate it hate it hate it hate it.

11. It's about Life! That's why I loved it...I've been kind of depressed
thinking "Is it all Worth It?" and while I'm not ready to start to "act out death" like the protagonist in this movie....sometimes I get close in my cynicism. So...watching that movie helped me get a better perspective back on my psyche.....

It's not like that movie can "cure one" if you've gone over the edge into cynical.......but it sure can help regain a little "perspective." At least it did it for me.....but then, I'm not "Everyone!"

22. Yeah...in a quirky way it's a Great Movie for the Christmas or Holiday
Edited on Thu Dec-15-05 08:29 PM by KoKo01
Season. The guy who loves death and is always trying to kill himself because he can't find real love and the older Lady who teaches him how to discover love...but knows that her time is now to go at her 80th....is in many ways..sort of what life is about, isn't it. That "beautiful give and take" if one can only open one's mind to it.

It really is a movie that didn't seem to date itself and it's from the 70's...

24. Was he really trying to kill himself, though?
I thought he was only trying to shock his parents / teachers. I got that he was overindulged and bored with life... or what he had experienced of life so far. Then he met Maude. :D
