We are now in our 100-year old prairie cottage (finally!), and I love it!
What character! It has a brick courtyard with a wisteria vine on an iron trellis that was planted in 1905. It has three species of hardwood floors, with heart-pine being dominant. It is the funkiest, and coolest house in Greenville, SC (all agree), and it is in the best neighborhood (Augusta/Crescent). It is certainly of the Frank Lloyd Wright "Prairie School," although it pre-dates him a few years (1905).

I am so glad we ditched that new downtown condo. Nick-Nick and Dr. "D" love the "new" house, too. We are so sad that sweet Sirius died before he could enjoy this house and yard.

1. THAT'S a "cottage"??! Looks more like an "estate" to me.
Gorgeous. I love all the windows and the Frank Loyd Wright look!

May your new home be a happy one....

Best wishes to you! :toast:

2. Is that what people in SC call a cottage?
I can't imagine what a full-fledge house must look like! ;)

It looks very nice. I love old homes too. Congratulations.

3. Prairie "Cottage" is an architectural style, not a statement of size.
In fact, it is a fairly small house. One side was once an apartment, and before that was re-connected, it was a very small house. One of Dr. "D's" good friends grew up in this house and Dr. "D" spent many nights here in the 1960s.

9. Yep.
Prairie/Arts&Crafts. A very sought after look in new houses (my M.D. brother payed $2.6 million for a new version of my old house in Ansley Park - Atlanta). But I got the real thing for a whole lot less!

18. Bring Austin culture and politics to my neck of the woods ..
.. and you are adopted! I am in BoJo-Land (Bob Jones "University"). I did see the piece on 60-Minutes tonight about Kinky Friedman's campaign for Texas governor. How do the Texas Democrats feel about his candidacy? I do love the Kinkster, but I'd hate to see him re-elect Little Ricky Goodhair. Know what I mean, Vern?

30. Well, the Kinky thing is mostly kind of a joke for many. It's true
that he has some support, but I don't see an overwhelming amount of serious support. That could always change.

And to check out some Austin culture, stop by anytime!

7. It's very beautiful.
I love that style of house, always laid out so perfectly. If I lived near you I would bring you bread- may this house never know hunger. Salt- May life always have flavor and wine - That's for joy and prosperity. :-) It's a Wonderful Life fan here. :hi:

11. BTW: All that glass in front is 1/16" wavy-glass (antique).
I have a bunch of it (wavy glass) in old doors in the cellar. It is not energy efficient, but it is oh, so cool!

Am looking at a house here in CA tomorrow that was built in 1905, but to buy a house here like the one you bought would cost a Brazillion California Dollars!

Congrats! It's absolutely gorgeous!

19. Well, 1905 was a good year!
Other than the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05, 1905 was pretty peaceful (although the war drums were beating for WW-1, thanks in part to the Second Boer War). Too bad 2005 was such a hideous example of wanton aggression.

20. nice house
greenville..hmmm i think that`s where "flip this house" is filmed. looks like a really nice house. i lived in a similar style house for several years and what i liked about this style is that they are very "friendly". you can feel right at home as soon as you open the door.

I am truly impressed. I'd love to have a house like that. Big question, is it designed for a climate like Wisconsin's?

24. Not really ..
The old windows and glass are very leaky. We replaced the 1940 addition's windows (master B/R, bath, and den) with double-hung Pella windows. With the 5-zone, double furnace heating, we can isolate the heat (although the front rooms must stay temp-even because of the piano).

The 3/12 (and sometimes 2/12 or less) roof pitch would never do in your region. That is much too shallow for your snowfalls. Ironically, Frank Loyd Wright designed many a house in the upper mid-west with 3/12 roof slopes. Go figure.

26. :::rapid intake of breath:::
Wow!

How beautiful!

I am a conniseur of excellent hardscape, and oooh baby, you've got some good hardscape goin' on! Lovely proportions on the pathways and nice brick wall action going on where it sweeps down from the house to meet the post, and your generous front landing means that you will be able to receive people gracefully without a big traffic jam at the front door.

Love how the vines soften the structure (but are you worried about damage to the mortar?)

And very, very nice, simple plantings that augment rather than detract from the house. Appropriate craftsman garden, I'd say...

Just lovely.

How wonderful.

I wish you many happy years there!

35. Wow! How long have you been in SC?
Excellent house! I love it.

My parents are contemplating moving to Aiken for retirement. I put up a notice in the SC state forum asking for inside skinny from anyone living in SC but haven't gotten a lot of feedback so far.

They love the fact that you can get some pretty incredible real estate deals there still.

And they think Aiken is "quaint".

They are solid blue Dems so I worry about their mental sanity living in SC. How do you fair?
