I felt horrible.

But the adults, well, I stun 'em first with a fly swatter and grab 'em w' tongs. That way I keep 'em fresh before I plunge them into the sizzling sesame oil.

68. Right here, oh mighty Bike-meister!
I have eaten just about everything that walks or crawls,
at one time or another. And I regret NOTHING.

I have eaten cows and deer and rabbits
and rattlesnakes and pigs and muskrats
and chickens and woodchucks and possums.

I have 3 really good recipes for squirrel,
and a few good ideas for OSTRICH.

The best meal I have had in the last month was 'steak tartare';
and my only complaint was that the raw egg on top of it
was pasty bland white, not earthy organic brown.

I am gnawing a 'slim jim' as I type this!
(and I have a GREAT recipe for those, as well)

So, it's pretty safe to call me CARNIVORE.

86. Good news!
Studies now show that soy isn't as good for you as touted. Doesn't protect your heart, doesn't lower your bad cholesterol, doesn't raise your good cholesterol. About the only thing it does do is taste NASTY and allow vegans to feel superior while ignoring the rabbits, snakes and other small wildlife that the harvesting process of soybeans kills.

106. You've misunderstood the review (not a study.)
An AHA review committee has concluded that soy proteins and soy isoflavones added as supplements to the Standard American Diet do not lower LDL, HDL or trigycerides, or protect against cancers--they're questioning the medicinal value of soy supplements, not the nutritional value of soy foods.

Here's the abstract:
http://circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/CIRCULATIONAHA.106.171052v1

Thanks for the "superior" crack, though. That's always nice.

89. AHA rejects health claim for soy products
A recent review by an American Heart Association (AHA) committee found soy products such as tofu, miso, and soy milk offer little health benefits, Associated Press (AP) reported on Jan 22.

The review committee went through many studies and came up with results that soy-based foods and supplements may not significantly reduce cholesterol.

thing, right? What I've read is simply that everyone should consume less fat, no matter where it comes from.

95. Yes, it's a good thing, as it says in the article linked above
Edited on Mon Jan-23-06 06:14 PM by Rob H.
The AHA acknowledges that soy products such as tofu, soy butter, soy nuts and some soy burgers can be part of heart healthy diet due to the fact that soy contains polyunsaturated fats, fiber, vitamins and minerals and lower saturated fat, according to AP.

102. (Negatives, too) SOY CAUSES ENDOCRINE DISRUPTION
Research published in this month's Biology of Reproduction shows that genistein, a plant estrogen found in soybeans, can disrupt the development of the ovaries of newborn female mice, causing reproductive problems and infertility. “This is a wakeup call for parents and pediatricians,” says Kaayla T. Daniel, PhD, author of The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food. “Soy infant formula contains high levels of phytoestrogens that can adversely affect the development of a baby's ovaries and other reproductive organs. This study adds to a growing body of evidence linking soy genistein and other phytoestrogens to endocrine disruption. Clearly soy consumption must be considered a factor in America's epidemic of infertility.”

109. Certainly none of us are arguing that soy infant formula is a good idea
Edited on Mon Jan-23-06 09:26 PM by LeftyMom
For one thing, it's not vegan because the vitamin D is derived from lanolin. For another, every soy formula sold in the US was made with GMO soybeans, last I heard.

The only healthy food for infants is human milk. Both cows milk and soy based substitutes pose serious short and long term health risks and should only be used when there's no way the mother can breastfeed and donor milk is unavailable. Anybody who suggests otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about.

It's a completely different issue from the health of soyfoods in the diets of older children and adults.

When those "studies" by that AHA "committee" show up in JAMA, you let me know, okay?

Lotta spin in that article, don't you agree?

Which "many studies" did they go through, anyway? Just curious.

116. Acually, I think the AP did.
The AHA review focused on soy isoflavone & protein supplements, not on foods, and they acknowledged that soy foods are healthy. Thing is, they're food, not medicine.
