You know what I noticed the other day?
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 03:30 AM by MissHoneychurch
this is the only board I am a member of. I would never in the world think about joining a political or whatever board with Germans. I mean I am German (as you all by now know), I live here, but I am not really interested to talk to others in German on a German board. Is that pathetic or what? What does that make me?

I don't know why, it just doesn't appeal to me to join a German board.

9. my fascination has to do with the times
when I was a nanny and later an intern in the U.S. I met very nice people. I felt at home (even more than sometimes in Germany). It would go too far right now to explain it.

7. found it over the TopTen
there was a link on a Germans news site (during the elections in 2004 and before that) to another American site that posted the TopTen. I read it, loved it, klicked on DU. Lurked here some months and a year ago I joined (couldn't resist all those cute kitten threads anymore).

17. I'm guessing, but...
I'd say you understand the U.S. influence on world affairs — especially in the last four-plus years — and you wish to get Americans' viewpoints on our government.

In my book, that makes you an enlightened, patriotic citizen of Earth. :patriot:

I wish there were more Europeans here. I enjoy very much hearing their opinions of the U.S. — good or bad.

I remember in 2000 me and some others followed the election very close. When I saw a pic of * the first time, he struck me just as plain dumb. I was scared when he became pResident. I didn't feel safe in this world anymore. I was scared WW3 was just around the corner.

43. LOL!
NO! ... because you don't want to speak German! :( But that's OK. ;)

I joined a Norwegian board the other day and I hardly speak Norsk! :D I only lived there a few months, but could not pick up the language. I tried to use what German I know (Ich wohnte in Innsbruck und studierte Deutsches an der Universität) ... but Norsk is totally different. Norsk only shares only a few words with German (ex. tag = dag), and probably shares more with English (remember that Battle of Hastings? :D)...oh, and I've spent many weeks at a time living in Germany - I especially dig Koblenz and the Mösel Valley, from Köln to Freiberg, to München, to Aachen, etc.

Actually, there's one guy here at DU that is from Brazil, but I can't get him to speak português with me, my FAVORITE language! I'm very good at speaking it, but I need to practice my writing, especially since I want to go back to live there again some day. I miss it very much. Que saudade!!

As far as practicing languages, I made my brother talk to me in Spanish for a whole hour today... it's been too long since I spoke it in depth, due to my concentrating on Portuguese and my newer forays into Italian and French. :D

I learned my English when I was a nanny in NC. It took me about 3 months till I could speak it. I used to listen to my tapes and one day I actually understood what they were singing
I decided I can speak English when I could say the word hippopotamus without getting a knot in my tongue

Did you ask a question about New Orleans needing librarians? Actually, the few we have are struggling to hold on to their jobs. My brother volunteered to help a library, and the good news is, that library is going to survive (not be sold to the real estate scavengers who are roaming around New Orleans, stealing homes and public buildings)

44. We might be related!
I come from a an abundant wheat growing region in south eastern Washington State called the Palouse. The land was considered worthless, but the Germmans who had perfected the art of dryland wheat farming immigrated and homesteaded in large numbers during the nineteenth century.

My Grandmother never quite grasped English. My father spoke German before he learned English in grade school. I learned many Christmas songs in their original German form, O' Tannenbaum, for example.

My father was born in 1919, so he was ripe for WWII. It was actually a little touch and go on whose side we would throw in on. No one liked the Nazi's, but the mother country was at stake. My family decided to remain and fought against the Axis nations. All this before I was born in 1959.

My family tree has been traced back to such towns as Schulp, Raade, Westeronfeld and Osteronfelt. (sp?)

The Palouse:

I don't even know where those towns are you mentioned (I mean the German ones). Part of my family moved to Canada after WW2 but I have no contact to them. On the one side it was a cousin from my grandfather, on the other I think also a cousin from my grandmother.
