1. Are you even near a flood zone?
Are you near the coast?

It doesn't matter what protection you have. The insurance companies will find some excuse not to pay.

You know, merh's house was destroyed by wind-driven water from a hurricane, not a flood in the classically defined sense, but still, the insurance company called it a flood and decided not to pay.

Insurance companies are utter fucking evil. I wish there was a way to have insurance without having to deal with insurance companies.

3. FEMA - Federal Emergency MY ASS!
If you have flood insurance and not wind, it was the wind that destroyed your home; if you have wind and not flood, well of course, it was flood that destoyed your home; and, if you have both, they get caught up fighting with each other who did the most damage or the damage first and you don't get shit.

Check your policy, you may have a clause that provides any water damage (broken pipes, backed up sewer) constitutes flood. They screw ya every chance they can get.

And after Katrina, I'm not sure you can evah be too high to escape a really scarey storm. x(
