"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench...
"a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side."

1. From growing up in Nashville my whole life, all I can speak of is....
...here. And here, it is nothing but a prefabricated product. To native Nashvillians, it's like any other business. Might as well be a factory that sells widgits.

3. the music business
it's never gonna work right...it's the old square peg into a round hole...making something that is essentially an art into a profit machine...you can't make a profit machine into art...and you can't make art into a profit machine...although some will try and may even succeed temporally...temporarily...temporaralley...temporariley...temperaliey...

4. Kleptocracy
Do you know Steve Albini's rant about it? http://www.negativland.com/albini.html

Live music is in serious trouble; audiences don't have the leisure time or money, and performers can't afford the gas to tour. I keep thinking about selling off my guitars before the bottom falls out altogether...

5. This quote is actually about television
I've seen this quote in a number of variations, so I looked it up. From his collection of '80s essays, Generation of Swine...

"The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason."

Certainly applies to the music biz too, though. He sure had a way with words.
