Oil furnace question
I'm moving to a place that is heated with oil. I didn't notice any gauge on the tank that would let me know it's almost empty. How do you check the oil levels on those things?

1. There should be a glass bowl or something on the top with

a float type gauge to read. At least mine did...

4. I'll look for that too
That tank looked ancient, but it's in it's own part of the basement and there's little light.

2. When I was a kid
We had the filling pipe in the front yard and had a long measuring pole that we stuck down it. Pretty much the same as checking the oil on a car. Of course that was many years ago.

3. Okay
I've seen the pipe for filling. I wonder if the "dipstick" is part of the cap or if it's separate. I'll add that to the list of questions for the owner. If it weren't so far away, I'd drive over and check it. :)

7. Gotcha. I'll ask the owner.
I like the sound method. I was married to a drummer and I actually have a pretty good ear for pitch...

:)

6. I have a stick to check mine..
also knocking on the side you get to know if you need it or not. Ive been doing this for years so I know just by knocking. Mine is in my basement so I have easy access.
