Local Bands you loved in High School
We had a bunch of them in the Harrisburg back in the mid-80s and I had all their albums. The Sharks almost made it when they won the first ever MTV Basement Videos (a showcase/contest for small bands to get their videos played on MTV. Of course this was back when MTV actually played videos). Other local bands we loved were Hybrid Ice, KIX (hair metal) and Philly LiveAid opening act The Hooters (although it was more of a Philly area band not Harrisburg). I even have Vinyl LPs of all these bands including a local one from my county, the Inciters and one from the SHarks that was autographed by the band.

So what local bands do you remember when you were a kid in high school? Did any of them make it?

1. there were few of those types of bands when I was in high
school. I think there was one cover band. So that would be a no. :D

Lots of folks I knew in college and after took a shot at labels, major and otherwise, with mixed results.

5. I could be a smart-ass and list all the Motown greats
But I'll play fair : )

The ones I remember were Cybotron and Was (Not Was).

Of course, the BIG names were Parliament/Funkadelic, which not many think of as Detroit acts but they in fact recorded their biggest hits in the Motor City.

There was also Bob Seger and Ted Nugent (who weren't personal faves but I loved "Still The Same").

24. You couldn't name all the motown greats
Not if you were in high school when Was(not Was) was playing around the city. Two completely different time periods. So, either you went to high school in the sixties or late seventies/early eighties. Can't be both, you know.

BTW, I attended a Detroit area high school from 1979-1983, so I know of what I speak. Even knew the Was bros., along with the 3-D Invisibles, Snake Out and Conditioned Response; among other bands. ;-)

6. Soul Asylum, Replacements, Husker Du, Limited Warranty, the Suburbs
All of whom "made it" at one level or another. Growing up in Minneapolis in the 80s kicked ass as far as music went.

44. No fair. You got to grow up in Minneapolis. That's cheating!
Iowa was the ugly duckling to the South. We didn't have too many prominent bands. Husker, Replacements, Sould Asylum--those were the days.

there are two groups that I remember well. Law, a three man band with a great lead guitarist and the Left End, who were a little like Alice Cooper.

14. Well, there was a band called "Distorted Visions"
but we all called them "Distorted Voices" which gives you an idea of what they sounded like. Nah, nothing good came out of any of those bands though there were some pretty good bar bands around later on. None of them went very far, as far as I know though. We were too far away from anywhere to attract decent bands (though in their early days, Aerosmith played a lot of the bars I later went to).

Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 06:14 PM by Gatchaman
They played at PSU (main campus) a lot in 88-89. I can't remember the name of the bar though. I'm sure it's changed names a dozen times since then. Cool band. My friend found their CD and sent me the mp3s of it. While they were great live, it really didn't come across on the CD. With better production, they could have made it.

I also remember a slightly harder band called Harpo. They had at least one LP, but I don't think they ever pressed it on CD.

Good times.

20. 9353, Trouble Funk, Minor Threat
Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 06:29 PM by wildeyed
One of the guys from Minor Threat is Fugazi and his label, Discord, still exists. At least I think so, been a long time since I was in DC.

Trouble Funk shoulda made it. Best live band in the history of the world. They were something called "Go-Go" but this crazy thing called "Rap" came out of NYC and that eneded up being the next big thing, instead.

Don't know what happed to 9353. A couple of the guys had hellacious drug problems, so I can guess....

They weren't a local band exactly... regional, I guess. They used to play both at the area boarding schools and at the college I went to in Virginia. Others I remember were Indecision, and SGL/SGGL.

39. In my early twenties
I loved the following local bands:

Daisy Dillman Band (southern rock)
The Suburbs
Chameleon
Ipso Facto (reggae)
Sussman Lawrence
Limited Warranty

out of all of these, I think The Suburbs were the only band to get more than modest national attention. Limited Warranty won Star Search and then got screwed over when it came time for their recording contract.
