I'm the last person in the country to see "Walk the Line"
I did like it. I thought Joaquin Phoenix had some great moments when he sang as Johnny Cash, but I felt that Reese Witherspoon had done a better job in a harder part as June Carter. The cameos were fantastic! In particular for me, a 3rd generation Texan, I loved Mother Maybelle Carter. She was the living image of my beloved aunt, Darling Ernest, of Brownwood, Texas.

1. I've not seen it yet
which if you knew me you'd realize is truly ironic.

2. Pay attention to the credits
There are some truly indelible cameos there. A nice memento for Cash. The movie is well worth seeing for that as well as for the main characters' portrayals. If you were a follower of Johnny Cash you could be disappointed but maybe not. Phoenix did not "do" Johnny Cash but he did a very good job of his persona and his angst. The smaller parts made the movie, IMHO.

3. The soundtrack is just as good as the movie
Buy a copy ASAP. It's awesome to hear Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon & the rest doing some pretty faithful renditions of Johnny Cash, June Carter, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins tunes.

4. Well, that was my era
and I have indelible memories of all of them. In particular, I think the film just didn't "get" Jerry Lee Lewis right. JLL was a wacko; the movie gave him too much sophistication, IMHO.

5. I liked the actor playing Jerry Lee much better than Dennis Quaid
in that awful movie. Talk about mugging for the camera!

11. Growing up, my parents had the "oldies" station constantly on...
A lot of those songs are permanently burned into my brain. But as for Jerry Lee Lewis, I can bet the reason that they didnt get him right was that Walk The Line wasnt really about Jerry Lee Lewis, or Carl Perkins, or Elvis.

12. You're right but
it still just didn't seem "right." It disconnected the movie for me.

9. You're missing out
I know you probably don't care for country music or Johnny Cash or June Carter or anyone or anything involved in this entire project, but it is a really good movie and tells a terrific story in a terrific way. It's just a fun, high-energy film. I have recommended this movie to so many people in your shoes, people who couldn't care less about the Johnny Cash realm, and they have just loved it. Your mileage may differ, but I doubt it. Go ahead and give it a shot.
