You can't because when it comes to the funk Parliament & George Clinton Rule!!!

I think if this Clinton ran in 2008 it would only mean more world peace, love and funk!

1. One could argue for James Brown's early band when Clyde Stubblefield was
drumming. But still, yeah, very very hard to fuck with George Clinton.

5. Wow, that looks like them playing at the Crystal Ballroom, a few blocks
from the home of STM.

Anyway, what asthmaticeog said - In the Jungle Groove era JB was hard to beat.

And post-Parliament, I must give snaps to the DC Go-Go band Troublefunk.

"Brick House" is a very funky song by an ultimately (fuck you, Lionel Richie!) unfunky band. I have heard it said by a pizza parlor employee that "Brick House" is quite possibly the funkiest song ever performed.

And Stevie Wonder's "You Haven't Done Nothin'" is so goddamned funky, but we know he can be a big ol' lame MOR wanker. "Superstition" by the same artist is also supremely funky.

Same with Isaac Hayes, whose funk peak may have been reached with "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic," on an album that also featured flaccid, if heartfelt, love ballads and country western covers.

Also post-funk pop band Cameo had a nice long funky run there for a few minutes.

Nice challenge, anyway. But I never found Parliament or Funkadelic to be funky enough, coopted as their funk was by acid, pop love, and the Process Church of the Final Judgment.

10. I love Trouble Funk
and most other DC Go Go. Some of the best concerts I've ever been to were Trouble Funk shows at the old 9:30. One of the great things about them was the way that they would share bills with punk bands. Wish I could say I saw one of the Minor Threat/Trouble Funk shows but I didn't. Did see them with Fugazi though.

13. Good memory, electricmonk.
I did manage to see Minor Threat, The Big Boys, and Trouble Funk at the old Landsburgh building.

That was quite a wonderful show, and a great crowd.

9. To quote Homer Simpson
"The wild shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner... the bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher... the competent drumwork of Don Brewer... Oh, man!"
